Mind = blown...Kept thinking I was spelling color wrong, talking to a few folk from the UK. Decided to look this up and self educate.

"Color vs. colour

Color and colour are different spellings of the same word. Color is the preferred spelling in American English, and colour is preferred in all other main varieties of English. The distinction extends to all derivatives of the word. Colored, coloring, colorer, colorful, and discolor are the U.S. spellings, and coloured, colouring, colourer, colourful, and discolour are preferred outside the U.S.

History

Both spellings are many centuries old. Color, now regarded as the American spelling, in fact predates the United States by several centuries. In early use the spellings vied for ascendancy with several other spellings. Colur, culoure, and coolor, for instance, were all in the mix before the modern British spelling gained permanent prevalence in the 17th century.1 The American preference for color took hold in the middle 19th century thanks in large part to the conscious simplification of English spellings by people such as the lexicographer Noah Webster"

There are actually a few American spellings similar to Color which have dropped that unnecessary U. Armor is one of them.

Spelling inconsistency is one of the reasons why its tough to read books from the 1600-1800s. People just spelled things however the hell they wanted.

The creation of dictionaries was truly a great development.

Hah, my job has brought me into the world of metric, most oilfield drilling components, perforation guns, even some of the charges, are built using metric. And as an apprentice mechanic. Was pretty unusual at first. But I'm warming up to it.

It seems in the US we just want to over-complicate everything!

Really boggles me, is why we felt the need to change the way the rest of the world (whom speak english) spell colour? Odd..

If it's not broken, fix it anyway I guess..

And this is true, I guess when Webster invented his dictionary, he was trying to simplify things, but why in the hell not simplify to coexist with the rest of the world?! I feel as if people from other english speaking areas in the world are looking at me as if I'm illiterate xD

It is a very common misconception that we don't use the Metric system. We use it when making any precise measurements and important calculations. We only still use Imperial units for things like highway speed and cooking at home. Most people here are perfectly capable of using both, and we almost never have reason to convert between the two.

Gray vs grey is another one that is different on opposite sides of the ocean. I never knew it was standard American spelling to use "gray". That just looks wrong. It's been "grey" all my life. Also back when I would write papers in college I used to love throwing random British English spellings of words in there completely inconsistently, just to confuse people.

On the subject of metric, I never really understood people who think it is some kind of sanctified perfect unit system and Imperial units are dumb. They both do different things and can be used in different places. Metric is a great consistent set of units, perfect for doing engineering calculations and unit conversion. Imperial units are easily divided into pretty much any arbitrary number (12 inches in a ft? You can divide that by 2, 3, 4, or 6 and get a clean number). Great for common every day tasks like cooking, or for laying out architecture and such where you say things like "I have 3 pictures, I want them evenly spaced across this wall".

It's especially hilarious when people claim metric is based off some kind of obvious natural basis. The official definition of a meter is "the length of the path travelled by light in vacuum during a time interval of 1/299,792,458 of a second." That is an arbitrary number to make imperial units look easy

IIRC they chose that amount of time because it matched up with the previous definition of a meter, but this measurement was a constant value instead of the totally arbitrary measurement which was made before.

Also, I spell Grey with an E and everyone I know does as well. I think the A vs E spelling depends regionally in the US.

I dunno mate... England pretty much invented Rugby, the defacto "father" of American Football, and it is STILL a superior game to "gridiron" (Ohh, and while England invented it, New Zealand perfected it )

Eh? Andrew Jackson and Jesus invented football as a way to work out between their boxing matches. What the heck kind of history books have you been reading?

Engineers, scientists and military use metric, no one else does. Some fields, like construction workers, use feet, but rather than use inches they use tenths of a foot, so while it's not metric it functions in the same way more or less.

As an engineer and a scientist I regularly have to swap between metric, imperial and other esoteric American systems of measurement and manufacture. Especially annoying when you are splicing together equipment from multiple sources and everything uses different screw diameters, threading and head types. Even more annoying when you are having to convert nonsense gibberish Imperial/other units into something sensible

I know what you mean SilverMk2...I screwed up an RMT (reservoir Monitor Tool) source shield by choosing the wrong screws =\ Didn't realise the tool used metric sized hex screws...whoops.

Don't know if the tool was multiple RMT's ghetto rigged together, or if the tool is actually meant to have multiple components in different measurements, I just know, my butt was burger.

I would point out that *some* Americans are perfectly capable of using the metric system, as applies to their field (such as mechanics using metric tools)... but outside of that, most Americans cannot figure out the metric system to save their lives.

Sure, it's not really -only- those three, and most Americans know what the metric system is, but they still mainly use feet, inches, and miles.

The weird thing about the UK is that we still use the imperial system for many everyday things:

Speeds of vehicles is in Miles per hour
Height of people is usually expressed as feet and inches
Beer is sold in pints, but milk in litres (which is still usually the metric equiv. of pints)
Weight of people is in Stones and pounds
Cars have horsepower but cubic centimeter engines
Large distances are in miles, short ones in meters, shorter still in feet, shorter still in millimeters.
Meat is sold in KG, but weed in sixteenth ounces.

And then you get your proper esoteric measurements

Cricket stumps are 1 chain from each other
Horse races are over furlongs

Whenever I had to weigh a patient, all the scales are set to read in kg... and we had a little chart on the wall when people inevitably asked what that was in stones

Same to a lesser extent when I measured their height. Thankfully most of the other measurements I take are generally too confusing for most people to ask what they mean

All the medical notes are supposed to be in metric but you always find some in imperial or with both recorded.

I think the only thing I use in metric is the mm; it is also the measurement I use most frequently due to model building but for almost everything else I use inches (unless the particular item is measured metrically, timber for instance, in which cases cm's and metres it is), feet and miles.

Had an American do one term at university and frequently had to remind him how many pounds were in a stone although, I have no idea why he kept asking.
