From the name I understand that they are some sort of auxiliary force that specialize in flamer weapons/melta weapons but I really want to know what they actually are.

eg.) Who the fight for? What role do they play in the Horus Heresy?

Thanks guys!

1. wrong forum. This is the Intros where people introduce themselves to Dakka.

Guessing from this being the first post ever, Welcome to Dakka.

This topic would be best put in the Background 40k. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/forums/show/31.page

2. Solar Auxilla I can only describe as an uber version of the Imperial Guard. They are the military force of the Solar Segmentum (i.e the Solar System as we know it, along with other planets such as Armaggedon and Elysian . Earth/Terra included). They have the best equipment you can possibly get outside of Space Marine tech, such as bolting a Volkite weapon to a Leman Russ or having their own special transport, having their mobile artillery (Basilisks, Medusas, etc) on Russ hulls and so on. They are the super elite section of the Imperial Army (at the time pre-heresy). They are second only to the Astartes in terms of effectiveness on the battlefield.

As for the flamer and fire based weapons I think that is only a matter of what has been released by FW. I don't think they focus on them. I believe the Solar Auxilla is more a Mechanized Blitzkrieg of unrelentingly powerful proportions.

They are who you call when you want something gotten rid of when Space Marines are not on hand and don't want to exterminatus anything.

That's not really correct.

The term Solar Auxilia originally referred to the militaries of Saturn after their absorption by the Imperium, the term was then used to refer to regiments raised on other worlds following the same pattern. The Solar Auxilia vehicles on the Forge World site are painted in the colours of the Manachaen Commonwealth in the Ultima Segmentum.

They are basically space marines without the augmentation or capital letters. In fact if memory serves there's a snippit in Conquest about Cthonian Solar Auxilia cohorts raised from rejected recruits for the Sons of Horus. They specialise in void-based warfare, primarily interface (space to ground) and boarding actions, but are also equipped for ground action using upgraded 'Solar' pattern armoured vehicles.

As Gashrog said pretty much. They are a type of imperial guard army that specializes in warfare in hostile environments. I was under the false impression originally that they represented the entirety of the 30k imperial guard but that is not the case at all. Stat wise you can think of them as storm troopers.

Lexicanum says they originate from the Segmentum Solar, however if you check the cited source it says diddly-squat about the Segmentum or their origin.

Neither their recruitment nor operations are tied to the Segmentum Solar, Forge World's Conquest book details the campaign for the area around Port Maw which sits on the border between the Segmentum Obscurus and the Ultima Segmentum. The Solar Auxilia pictured above are from the 6633rd Solar Auxilia Cohort, whose colours are explicitly stated in the book to have been derived from the blue and yellow livery of the Ultima Segmentum Armada Imperialis.

Basically more like the 30k equivalent of Battle Sisters than Guard.

Or 30k Stormtroopers. One of the two.

(Then again Stormtroopers are basically Battle Sisters with no power armour, so...)

Krieg! What a hole...

Closer to Stormtroopers as far as gear goes.

Does that mean there's a possibly of an actual Imperial Army, is the Solar auxilia meant to represent the whole thing?

Equipment wise they are closer to Storm Troopers.

Conceptwise they are literally second-rate space marines:

"the Solar Auxilia Cohorts are the definitive example of a heavy void infantry formation of the Exercitus Imperialis. As such they are fully trained and equipped to take on void war zones, hazardous planetary environments and operate both as 'interface' troops (meaning transitioning from void to ground operations in combat conditions) and fight heavily contested boarding actions" ~ Conquest page 82

"it became common for many smaller-scale Expeditionary fleets which did not feature any substantial Legiones Astartes presence to be led by a core of Solar Auxilia under the particular authority of a Lord Marshal" ~ Conquest page 81

"Of the myriad regiments and battalions of the the Imperalis Auxilia, more commonly referred to the as 'Imperial Army' the Solar Auxilia are amongst the most elite, discplined and well-equipped fighting forces, widely considered by many to be second only to the superhuman Legiones Astartes in their military effectiveness." ~ Conquest page 80

The Sisters of silence are arguably better, They're only "Second rate Space Marines" because there is no other Stand alone force in 30k close enough to Space Marines.

The Sisters of Silence are a mission-centric Spec Ops force with a single type of operation in mind, you can't really compare them militarily to front-line soldiers like Marines and Auxilia.

That's what I meant, The only reason the Solar Auxilia are "second rate Space Marines" is that they're the ones to come closest to Space Marines in 30k, The gap is pretty large though.

Storm Troopers are pure special forces, the only vehicles included in the standalone Militarum Tempestus Codex are the Valkyrie and the dinky little Tauros.

By comparison the Solar Auxilia are a combined arms formation with a tendency towards heavy armour, not only do most Cohorts include a super-heavy armour sub-cohort, but even the infantry's standard transport - the Dracosan - is a variant of the Malcador heavy/assault tank hull.

Yeah, it'd be like having 30,000 men with a pair of M1A2 Abrams tank companies and all of whom are mech'd up in Merkava tanks, and being like "man, they're just tryin'a copy Delta Force!"

They were an elite force in the Imperial Army during the Great Crusade. They are probably so elite because there from the Segmentum Solar, meaning they were a part of the crusade for longer than anyone else.

They are an elite Imperial Army (Imperialis Auxilia) detachment originating somewhere within the Segmentum Solar. Probably originating from Terra/Sol system.
