Definitely need help on this one. I'm looking to get into Grey Knights, and I figure I'll start at 500 pts for the sake of testing the waters. Considering how expensive the units are though, making 500 pts for Grey Knights is proving to be a challenge for me.

HQ:
Inquisitor Coteaz
-Coteaz Stuff

Troops:
Strike Squad x5
-3 with nemesis sword and storm bolters
-1 with Psycannon
-Justicar with nemesis Daemon Hammer and storm bolter

Terminators
-3 with nemesis sword and storm bolters
-1 with nemesis sword and psycannon
-Justicar with Nemesis Daemon Hammer and storm bolter.

I believe I have about 60 pts leftover. But if I replace the SS with another group of terminators that are identical to the ones I just listed, I will be 500 pts exactly.

Thoughts? (Remember, new to Grey Knights. So please be merciful)

I prefer termies over the strike squad... Too many ap3 weapons these days and deep striking turn 1 potentially is great but you run the risk of being tabled by leaves big coteaz all alone. 500 is tough, because it doesn't leave room for dreadknights usually

Are you playing 5th Ed codex? Coteaz isn't in the current dex anymore.

I came up with three lists.

Normal CAD: 500
Brotherhood Champion - 150
Strike Squad - 1 NDH - 120
Strike Squad - 1 Incinerator- 115
Strike Squad - 1 Incinerator - 115

Unbound: 500
Teminator Squad - NWS - 170
Terminator Squad- 165
Terminator Squad - 165

Nemesis Strike Force: 500
Librarian - Nemesis Warding Staff, Digital Weapons - 120
Terminator Squad - NDH, Psycannon - 195
Terminator Squad - NDH, Incinerator - 185

"Because the Wolves kill cleanly, and we do not. They also kill quickly, and we have never done that, either. They fight, they win, and they stalk back to their ships with their tails held high. If they were ever ordered to destroy another Legion, they would do it by hurling warrior against warrior, seeking to grind their enemies down with the admirable delusions of the 'noble savage'. If we were ever ordered to assault another Legion, we would virus bomb their recruitment worlds; slaughter their serfs and slaves; poison their gene-seed repositories and spend the next dozen decades watching them die slow, humiliating deaths. Night after night, raid after raid, we'd overwhelm stragglers from their fleets and bleach their skulls to hang from our armour, until none remained. But that isn't the quick execution the Emperor needs, is it? The Wolves go for the throat. We go for the eyes. Then the tongue. Then the hands. Then the feet. Then we skin the crippled remains, and offer it up as an example to any still bearing witness. The Wolves were warriors before they became soldiers. We were murderers first, last, and always!" —Jago Sevatarion

Well that is some good information to know before any purchases. Most of the information I have found online refers to 5th edition it seems (which is a shame, because I wanted to use Coteaz). So thanks for the heads up!

Also, Lord Blackscale, I'll probably end up using one of your lists. So thanks for those!

Feel free to use Coteaz...he just won't count as a required HQ in a Battle-Forged list. Just take an Inquisitorial Detachment with Coteaz. He's still a pretty great character!

I personaly like my third list the best. It seems to be the most point efficient. And as for Tim's lists, that seems to be a good way to lose friends. If I agreed to play a 500 point game and some one threw out a storm raven, or especially a dreadknight, I would pack my things before the fist die was rolled.

Yeah the manager at my local GWS flat out told me that if I run anything cheesy, especially with Grey Knights, in a 500 pts list, no one will want to play with me. Now terminators are mean, but not Dreadknight or Storm Raven mean. So I'll be using the third list you suggested. Thanks!

Amusingly, that list has a 1 in 9 chance of losing first turn due to failing to deep strike on turn 1 with both units. I'm not sure there's much you can do about that at 500 points but it's something to keep in mind.

Let me know how it turns out. If you are worried about deep strike you can run the list as a regular CAD.

How would that work exactly? Am I able to start with all my units in reserves as long as I'm the one going first?

Anyone can start with all their units in reserve if they wish. The problem is that at the end of any GAME turn (after both players get a turn), if you have no units on the board then you automatically lose. So most armies would lose the game if they start with everything in reserves because they don't have a way to arrive on turn 1. The Grey Knight NSF detachment allows for turn 1 Deep Strike so you are able to hold everything in reserve and not auto-lose.

With the Librarian as my warlord, wouldn't he automatically come out of reserves in turn 1 and I would be reroll the scatter die?

I think a warlord trait does this but you'd have to roll for that.

If you're worried about being off-table at the end of T1, you can always use the Nemesis Detachment and NOT put things in Deep Strike Reserve.
That way, you'd still only need one Troop! It's completely unnecessary to use a CAD.

Scoop to a Storm Raven or DK? Dark Eldar have plenty of AP2 that could toast the DK., plus you are also shrinking your model count even lower. People I know play to win... Which might be putting an imperial bunker up, and setting a heavy weapons squad in it with 4 rocket launchers. Lots of ways to play.

I think I'm sticking with the Nemesis Strike Force that Lord Blackscale suggested, for the sake of not being a complete dick haha
