I've seen people convert them into tree kin.
S3 T4 just doesn't get it done.
If you insist on running them, you'll want mindrazor or wild form to try and make them useful.

As matt said, they are basically a melee anvil that cannot buy static combat res and is outdone by most of the elf core choices as an anvil (Eternal Guard and Bleakswords specifically).

Could work. Need something else to hit the flanks and do damage though.

For now, for a 1000 pts, I working around 2 teams of 15 glade gards (one with higbane and one with trueflight) and I want to use the dryads with the shadowdancer for a final blow on the weakened unit. For flanking, I'm looking for warhawk riders.

Yeah I run a pure forest spirit army which... Is not as good as it once was... Especially before since you could make elf characters forest spirits...
Alas, I try and use them to hit the side of something, let the Treekin get the front.

The best use I have seen for them is as a bunker for a number of Branchwraith's with a Lv beasts to back it up. You can have an entire front rank of characters for relatively cheap, some life backup, and buff the characters with beasts to make the unit nasty.

It is seriously unreliable though. It is also kind of expensive. It can be fun though.

I use a block of 24 with Drycha. Not competitive apparently, but we are playing on a semi-casual level. I also tend to include a lvl 1 beast wizard in my life to make them S4,T5... works well. The unit gets expensive but can actually deal quite a bit of damage with hatred on charge turn.

Be careful where you deploy them and what you do with them exactly. Area Denial can work if deployed correctly. If they can fight in a venom thicket, they get rerolls to hit with all 6s being auto-wounds... on T5 they're really not so bad anymore. A lot of work to make them so, but the experience is very satisfying... especially that nobody thinks this unit can win combat...

Use them as unit filler.

A small unit of Wardancers that can remove ranks (alternate with the shadow dancer) could win combats for you.

You'll still lose to combat res.

That's a very definite answer with no regard to who they're fighting.

The only thing Dryads beat sensibly even without ranks is VC core.

They suffer from the same fate as all elf infantry core. It's a condition called "Need-buffs-up-every-orifice".

With the exclusion of Witch Elves and Darkshards who don't need any buffs.

I know how this is going to end...

Comparing Darkshards to Dryads is like comparing a TV to a Lamborghini.

As for Witches, let's not open that can of worms.
