So I had a thought about something, but it might be overly complicated for no benefit/good reason.
What if vehicles could be embarked/disembarked by the pilot?
The idea came to mind whilst thinking about Tau suits and making them a 'mech' class where you had to buy a pilot in addition. Then I thought how Orks could have hijacker units that could attempt to steal units.
In vehicles the pilot could emergency eject give you another model (thereby minorly increasing utility).
It could also allow scenarios where the objective is to liberate a tank facility (for example) where in the process you can utilise tanks.
The rule would have to be thought out fully but units that could do it would be limited and only tanks from your faction could be controlled (except in special situations) without a massive drop in utility.
I suppose this would be a house rule, but i thought it would be fun.

I think this is cool, and I've always wanted to make a tank crew armed with Laz pistols who can jump out the vehicle when it gets wrecked, but die instantly for explodes.
May be they could somehow try and repair the vehicle, at a risk to their lives, then for every crew member that dies minus 1 Bs till its 1.

And refuse to love the Spinosaurus because it is a hamfisted attempt at taking what you loved, making it TREX +++ and trying to sell you it.

Didn't bikes used to be like this is one of the earlier editions? I do sadly feel like things would get really complicated.

Yeah I think it would over complicate an already over complicated game. It's a good idea for a scenario or campaign, or as a house rule. It would work at a more skirmish level, but then you rarely have vehicles. Some TAGs in Infinity have pilots/operators that can disembark when the TAG is destroyed though. One even has an ejector system.

Some Ork table for looting what they rip apart would be totally fething sweet!
Something like, for any vehicle HP'd in melee:
1: ba-BOOM (Explodes!)
2-3: Not'n.
4: Da 'eavy bitz! (+1 armor save)
5: Moar dakka! (Each weapon it had can be looted by one Ork, but always snapshots)
6+: Git us der, ya git! (Vehicle regains 1hp, entire unit embarks, vehicle loses 1AV, always snapshots, and takes Dangerous Terrain every turn. Under Ork control)

IG used to have an escape hatch upgrade on their vehicles. You got d3 crewmen to pop out when the vehicle is destroyed, the enemy didn't get the kill point until the crew was also killed.
In general though this is adding flavor but ultimately not adding much gameplay. A downed pilot makes for a good objective but not a great unit.

Very much true. But in homebrew scenarios flavour is needed.
Oh yeah, and I realised can do this.

Small games it'd make sense; I'm working on a similar system for my Mordheim conversion (including permitting folks to shoot the pilot out of the vehicle and hijack it). Regular 40k is way too big to try to keep track of it all.

It would be cool for themed Kill Team games. a Strike Team of Deathwatch Marines have to infiltrate a Xenos supply depot and and steal a tank for research, the enemy sentinels start off heavily outpointed but can hop on jetbies/battlesuits/Kans/Sentinels/whatever depending on race.
Similarly, once the Marines have captured the tank, they have to escape in it without getting blown up.

if i was playing a mate who had orks, i would allow this if i was able to repair a 'wrecked' vehicle back to functional with 1HP and crew it with servitors that you normally have with a techmarine.
like, take one of his servitors away for each turret and one for the driver. and also allow a techmarine to be crew; a servo arm making him count as two crew, three for having a servo-harness/macchinator-array.
two techmarines should also be allowed to crew a single vehicle together.
then a couple of techmarines and servitor squads could repair and then re-crew a superheavy - f#*k yeah!
