Subject: Block Gifs option?

I'm wondering if an option might be added at some point - in the same vein that you can block signatures - to block GIFs.

Why is this needed? Are gifs really that much of a problem?

Why do some people block signatures?

Don't see how that answers my question.... But anyway.
I don't see how gifs are a problem.
-Gifs in sigs: Disable them.
-Gifs in avatars: Disable them.
-Gifs in posts: .... Deal with it. People don't attach gifs to their posts that often.

I thought it would be easy to extrapolate...
People might want to block gifs for the same reason they block sigs:
- To speed up the site
- to make it easier to read threads
- to make it easier to read on tablets and other devices
- to prevent the site from looking like a teenager's tumblr

Yes sir! Sorry to have disturbed you sir - please don't ban me.
Should we send all suggestions directly to you before posting now or how does this work...

Seconded! Now fall back in line mister, before you force me to go and post a hundred gifs in every thread you will ever go to. *evil laugh* On a more serious note, I don't see why gifs in posts could be a big deal. Almost all gifs I see here on Dakka are either in avatars or in signatures, only rarely in posts. That being said, having an option to block any and all images (including gifs) within posts could be really useful to speed the site up and make it more readable on mobile devices and archeotech computers.

Use Firefox (or maybe chrome). Install an extension that blocks gif files/stops the automatic animating of them.
Just tried it and you can set the options so that a gif doesn't do anything until you hover over it (thanks for being a guinea pig, Iron_Captain). CTRL+M also stops/starts every gif on the page at once.
Done.

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.” |

I remember the day I discovered you could have an animating gif as your profile picture... I was happy that day. I don't recall the last time I saw an animating image in the body of a post though.

Like watching other people play video games (badly) while blathering about nothing in particular? Check out my Youtube channel: joemamaUSA!

Does it say [MOD] anywhere on my profile? No? Didn't think so.
So stop it that childish gak. It's unbecoming and makes you look like a fool.
Now while you might like to think I was having a go at you, I wasn't. But to get to your points
- To speed up the site
How many gifs do you think it takes to actually slow down a website? I don't know. But I'm betting that it takes a hell of a lot more then the odd random one or two gifs to slow down a website. Especially one as well equip and maintained as Dakka.
- to make it easier to read threads
I guess, sure. What I'd genuinely like to know though, is how it impedes your thread viewing? I mean... could you not just scroll past them till they are out of view and then continue reading?
- to make it easier to read on tablets and other devices
So basically same point as above then?
- to prevent the site from looking like a teenager's tumblr Where are all these gifs that they are making Dakka look like a teenagers tumbler? Like really. Where? Please do show me.
