What is Warhammer 30k?

I've seen it mentioned in a lot of places, but I have no idea what Warhammer 30k is.

Could someone explain it to me?

For a longer explanation, 30k is the term used for the Horus Heresy, which has a set of rules and models put out by Forge World. They are compatible with 40k, though ideally 30k is meant to be played with only 30k armies (i.e. Space Marine Legions, Mechanicum and Solar Auxilla)

It's Warhammer 40K with better balance.

I saw something about it being just for SM/Chaos.

Its designed for Marines vs Marines.

Current Factions are:

Marines
Solar Auxlia
Mechanicum
Imperial Knights

Due to the setting being all down to the biggest imperial civil war in history those are by and large the factions you willl see (imperial) with potential daemons coming later.

Melcavuk is correct in that those are the current HH armies.

That said, depending on your meta and gaming group, the rules are completely compatible between 30k and 40k, so you can fight across games. A regular opponent of mine does this, and they are fairly balanced and the games are fine.

The word from Forgeworld is that it's compatible with 40K armies, but the players may want to handicap the 30K army a bit by giving the 40K army a bit more points or increasing the squad-sizes of units. This is because 30K has some really devastating weapons designed to kill mass amounts of MEQ, which therefore makes it overkill against hordes.

In my experience, 30K armies are overcosted against 40K armies up to about 2000 points, then they even out.

Traditionally I have found that Legion Armies fare poorly against 40K armies sub 2000 points due to squad size. However Mechanicum have alot of tricks that make them very potent vs equal sized 40K armies. Knight armies are well Knights.

I find that 30K already has a handicap against 40K as there are no CADs, only troops are scoring (and not even ObSec), no formations (Rites of War come close), etc. The 30K armies are restricted to what the 6th Edition army rules were like: one primary detachment, one allied, one fortification, and one Lord of War.

Also, the HH doesn't have to be played stupidly expensive. I saw a good fight on Miniwargaming with a dude that had a couple squads of Imperial Fists, a Librarian, and an Imperial Knight as something like a 1500 Point army.

30k has some really awesome HQ characters though. I really want to run Sigismund in my Black Templar list. I mean, Sigismund was the first Emperor's Champion, and first High Marshal of the Black Templar.

But in short, its warhammer in the year 30,000 vs warhammer in the year 40,000.

10,000 years worth of lost technology. Because the 30k stuff involves better equipment and better tech.

the FW update for book one:betrayal says that although the armies/rulesets aren't intended for use in 40k, it is generally a fair fight.

it also says that lord of war choices (primarchs, titans etc) are definitely NOT intended for 40k.

it is acknowledged at the end of the errata that you may want to allow 40k opponents to increase their troop choice squad sizes but i haven't had any issues and my opponents have never needed to increase their troop squad numbers

try to remember when you do play it, that you are 10,000 years before 40k - the emperor is still alive and mankind is on a kind-of victory lap around the galaxy, slapping an imperial eagle on just about any piece of rock which has value and generally behaving like the british did post-industrial revolution. kill anything which doesn't conform.

30k games are brutal, you will lose a lot of models and need to get used to it, 30k vs 40k can be unbalanced (mainly vs orks or horde nids) but on the whole the armies match up well
