So the taurox model is, to put it bluntly, quite ugly, and not in a good way however the South African 'Buffel' (Buffalo) is ugly in a good way and looks like something a bunch of guardsmen would ride around in...

Anyhow, I made my own from scratch, because winter, in Canada. Whats a guy supposed to do?
Spoiler:

And some photos of the real thing, because why not, right?

Oh hell yes. I've always wanted to build an MRAP for 40k.

They are really simple, all those nice boxy shapes are the best, and plasticard is cheap enough to experiment with - so long as you have time... That took me 3.5 hours and used about $2 worth of material, (so far, theres a lot of work left) I got the wheels from the dollar store, cheap, yes but its a load of work and tinkering.

All because I hate the taurox model with a passion...

Also, I can send you my very rough plan along with the dimensions if you want to try making your own.

I'll be interested in seeing how this goes. You certainly seem to have the basic structure right, which is a vital start.

Since this will count-as a Taurox, how close are the dimensions? Unless it's only for casual games, it's worth the extra effort to get it close to the standard GW dimensions, to avoid in-game arguments re 'modelling for advantage'.

I like it, Could be quite interesting once detailed out, certainly off to a good start.
The taurox model... I hated it too.

Until I found a use for it - the problem I found was the tracks. Theyre just not right, cant put my finger on it.
My Ork Mek enjoyed the chassis though! Could be my fav Trukk in the motor pool

Spoiler:

Thats about 60% taurox, 40% ork trukk kits. with some plasticard and greenstuff used in the extension of the rear, its a tiny bit longer and narrower than a regular trukk kit. the tracks got used making a halftrak, had to combine the two sets into a decent length track though

As for as the size goes its only a half centimeter too low and another half too long with weapons and all that it will be almost perfect, and most of the folks a the local store like my work so it should be okay.

Oh, and I have an update!!!

And with a couple of other things to show the size of that bad boy.

But why not just buy one from Laser Cut Card? http://www.lasercutcard.co.za/shop/vehicles/buffel

... Why does everyone do this when someone is doing a scratch build? I'm going to assume 1) the OP wanted to build it himself, 2) he said $2 in materials vs $19+shipping.

yep, because assuming is always the way to go. And only $2 in materials, yeah right, one sheet of plastic card can cost that, not to mention all the GW bitz in the images, nice extreme exaggeration.
.
Besides, because 40k is such a small tight knit community of caring and sharing people, why not make people aware that there IS an exact product on the market, that they might not have been aware of?
.
Again, great scratch-building OP.

Thanks, and the main reason for the build is the size, it needed to be as big as the GW version that its standing in for, not cost and by now its cost is closer to $10 (but it is a fun looking kit... I might have to get one )

Very cool. Can't wait to see how the rest of the detailing turns out.

As for why the OP did scratch build vs ordering a kit, why does anyeone build a conversion rather than just "buying XXX kit"....because this hobby is about art and process as much as it is final product.

Because it's NOT about the ch-ching-ch-ching. It's about the building and the DIY.

Scratchbuilding satisfies the same need that building your own BBQ ('Grill' for you furriners) out of an old drum and some surplus tank traps with the aid of an oxy-spanner - or those old wooden things.
The need to MAKE IT OURSELVES to "see if I can do it.". It's a "proof of concept" thing. It's also about the having something that isn't identical to everyone else's thing.

If it was ONLY about the cost, I'd buy it.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

Lol, so you knew there was a 28mm model out there already, riiiiiiiight...

Thanks for defining scratch-building and the motivation behind it.

Peeps on this site love to give no input or information, and just attack, again, great scratch-building, just making you aware there was a 28mm version out there, as that Buffel is sooooo 40k, and 1/35 is to big.
.
Keep up the good work!

Yeah but Imperial vehicles have never been pretty so it fits right in

And she's almost done, with at least two more planned when I get some more parts in.

Next I'll start on painting, probably with a urban scheme then I'll go from there.
