In an alternate reality where the Necrontyr retreated from the galaxy rather than sealing themselves away for the Long Sleep, the limited number of sapient Necrons became a problem when rebuilding the armies. Warriors were useless for anything but cannon fodder, but the Immortals retained enough sapience to be useful as unit leaders. The most intelligent were retrained as drovers to lead the vast new armies of Canoptek war-robots into battle and guide their wrath. Mounted upon Canoptek Spyder mounts, the Immortal adds little to the unit's combat capabilities, but as a control node, the benefits are immense. In a last, desperate bid to turn the tide against the New Necrontyr Empire, the Warp Gods reached through the last gap in the Pylon Network and ripped forth several of these new units, replacing them with the greatest commandos of the Prime Reality.
Basically, what would the Necrons do if they hid in another galaxy with no opposition and thus enough resources to build an entire, galaxy-consuming hoard? Also explains where Marbo went.
