This is potentially a gamechanger imo... with Microsoft's budgets... whoa...

+ 40k (watch TV anywhere!)

= take my money

An app could be written to do 40k sort of like the one people use for 40k matches online now. No models and no dice and play remotely. Instead of painting your models it could just be create new animations or new skins. Develop basic skins and models but let the community mod them. This could be huge. I could have an army of naked guardsmen that piss lasfire! You know there would be a S&M sisters of battle. This could be a great startup.

Besides the challenges of incorporating software with this product, the hardware needs to be robust, energy efficient and comfortable.

So... a "holodeck" in every room, eh?

I do dislike being a downer, but I have to agree with KingCracker here. Release it and if it actually works like they say, first I'll spend 10 minutes dumbstruck and then I'll go buy one.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

You notice how only the POV character even had one on? All of the people reacting to them or showing them how to do stuff didn't have one. Probably because they'll be so damn expensive and awkward to wear.

If its anything like teaching your phone speech or gestures... i would think it may be a step in the right direction but I doubt any of that stuff they do in the video will be doable by the average individual out of the box.

Will probably take a long period of gesture training for one thing. And then when the guy was painting that rocket with the digital airbrush? Well you'd actually have to be able to handle the physical portion of the program....

I dunno, could be neat!

A voice in my head says this is a bad development, that it will cause people to live even more in a fake, virtual world and have even less attention for other people. Just like mobile phones, but worse.
I am probably just mad.

Like most normal people who saw this video, I'm very interested.

I want it, and will buy one if the tech gets cheap and good enough.

It should be noted that part of reason in the movie is loss of bone mass due to low gravity.

This is dakka OT. Keep your 40k for elsewhere. The important thing here is 3D PORN!

 GrimDork wrote:

I don't know about gesture training, but speech training on a PC is a doodle. The issue with phones is limited processing power, lots of background noise and they try and do it mostly on the fly rather than a setup. Programs like Dragon Naturally Speaking are pretty good out of the box and only takes about 10 mins to run through the setup, where by it is very accurate.

I could see this giving some interesting possibilities, and now MS have got in to it I can see something good coming along soon. I would guess we are at the stage with things like the ocolus rift where we were with MP3 players in 1999/2000. We are just waiting for someone to do what the iPod did for music players. I think this is the next big thing. It could also be the tech that brings 3D printers in to the mainstream. CAD programs can be a pain, mostly because most people are not good at thinking in 3D, but this could make the jump.

If they can sell it for under £500 as a peripheral or £1k as a standalone unit I would be very interested, assuming it is as slim and unbulky as they say. The rift is interesting, but too heavy and too restrictive. If they can keep it under £2k to start with I think they will have a winner, as long as prices go down in the near future and it is anything like the video.

Probably work

I wasn't thrilled about google glass. I don't think I'm thrilled about this. I mean, the possibilities seem endless and alluring, but I enjoy getting away from screens sometimes, not depending upon them to do absolutely everything for me. Cluttering my apartment with virtual minecraft does sound fun though.

Also, Microsoft's R&D puts out some pretty impressive things... that don't go anywhere and quietly die. Remember Surface? That really incredible table looking thing that interacted with objects and stuff before they repoed the Surface name to slap it on a tablet line? I think they still have it around and call it something else nowadays, but I don't recall what it is, because they haven't actually done anything with that tech in so long.
