Been Around the Block

Hello, I have a quick question.

Me and a couple of friends were having a game the other day, and one of my friends wanted to shoot my DK. But my DK was right behind his Guard squad.

I am under the impression he can not shoot me, because they are facing the wrong way. no LOS, and not able to 360 degree firer?

We carried on as if the other person was right, and went with the shooting. But who was right?

Thank you for your time.

Non vehicle units essentially have 360 line of sight. No arcs, nothing.

Yeah, facing doesn't matter at all for non -vehicle models in this edition, because los is drawn from anywhere on the model's body instead of from the eyes.

Yep, there's no concept of "facing" in 40k.

Take a look at the very beginning of the rulebook, where it describes how line of sight works. Note that you can draw LOS from any part of the model - that means that drawing LOS from the back of the Daemon Prince's head to the guardsman is perfectly legitimate.

Also, models treat others models in their own unit as being transparent for line of sight purposes. In other words, they can shoot through their buddies.

Facing on Monstrous Creatures: Does this mean the Hive Crone (or harpy?) can use it's template in any direction from the model?

Because I know now that the heldrake must use the template the actual weapon, but the heldrake is a vehicle.

As odd as that is, thank you very much for the classification

Yep, the Tyranid FMC can shoot backwards if they want. The Heldrake is limited by the vehicle weapon rules (you have to place the narrow end of the template within the 45 degree arc that the weapon can fire at). The 6e FAQ for CSM gave the Heldrake FMC-like shooting, which really didn't jive with the rules.
