I'll tell it straight up, I never played crons before their 5th ed codex. Though I liked the idea of an army of returning dead, their old fluff never interested me, as I enjoy the concept of individuality. Personality and customization is the only reason I collect minis, and plastic and paint can only go so far for me to believe it.
When the 5th ed codex came out, it was a completely different read/breed of Necrons; their code of honour, their enslavement of the C'tans, and their grandeur made them far less bland. The tipping point, where my interest met my wallet, was the special characters; each was zany and strange, showing many extremes, a lot of which were real mental disorders you can find in people. This makes them relatable (kinda ), and I realized I could make my own insane personalities. From there, I started to collect and paint.
After a lot of progress, I found myself lagging; I painted a lot, but needed something to re-ignite my interest. The new codex came out, and I noticed that almost everything was sadly the same. While it was still the same crons, I was hoping to find more insight on their behaviour. Then I read the description of Immortals; according to it, they can actually think, and feel triumph and pleasure. Madness, to old cron lovers, but to me, it inspired me to continue all over again.
What are some of your aspects of the fluff that inspire you to do something, whether it was to collect, paint a certain way, make a certain tactical move, or is just place awesome?

I always found day dreaming about my warband helped! I'm currently seeing my Alpha Legion Lord who's progressed from an Apothecary involved in Deliverance Lost, and is interested simply in the genetics of the Adeptus Astartes to further the Alpha Legion.
I pull a lot of inspiration from the various books but really it can be the simplist of things. For instance, Azrael is going to be the next purchase for my Dark Angels for one reason alone. I like bullpup style rifles. For those that don't know, that means the magazine is BEHIND the trigger. Elysian drop troops have this style of Lasrifle. I was considering a Terminator Librarian to lead a Deathwing command squad or Sammael because I planned on using Ravenwing the most, but Azrael has a bullpup Combi Plasma. I was sold the moment I saw that.
For others it's more about what had been happening at the time in the game or fluff. I started Ultramarines when the Fire Warrior game came out, which was also about the time the Battle of Macragge starter set came out and I had already started Tyranids. So my Ultramarines are 3rd Company led by Captain Ardias with Tyrannic War Veteran support. No other members of 1st Company so no Sternguard, blah blah blah. Just 3rd Company and Cassius's Formation.
My Tyranids are painted in the dark red and black color scheme of the 3rd Edition codex cover. Again, just the timing I got into the game.
My Eldar are primarily exodites with Rangers, kinda-sorta Corsairs and Dark Eldar. Harlequins will be added to the mix because of the recent releases and they fit with the whole 'Outcast' thing.
My Blood Angels are recent and I got them with Shields of Baal, so I am using Archangels and Dante is coming in later. The most minimal troops outside of that and I'm likely going to use any non-Archangel unit as Flesh Tearers support. Atleast to paint them that way.

I never noticed! That's really cool.

I also really like the Outcast Eldar theme, originally I was going to do a corsair style army after reading Doom of Mymeara, but I can't afford the Corsair Guardian conversion kits, so I latched onto the croneworld Spirit Gem raiding "parties". I don't know muuuuch about this part of the fluff and I haven't read it much more, but I know they send Wraith units to crone worlds to retrieve Gems and that's what I want to focus my army on primarily, with mayyyybe a side of renegade Corsairs fluff.

in HH book one betrayal page 58, there is an exerpt from the testimony of Crysos Morturg about what happened on Isstvan3; it's about the ambush launched by Caleb Decima, Crysos Morturg and Shabran Darr.
i loved that bit.
buried thallax, servitor controlled vehicles, Ordo Reductor siege crucible turned into a nuclear IED and Caleb commandeering a super-heavy tank - awesome x 10^1000000!
just before it on page 54 is another exerpt from Crysos Morturg's testimony where he gets seperated from his squad and falls into a pit of dead spacemarine parts.
i love thallax and that bit gave me goose-bumps!
these two peices truly made the horus heresy for me. i regard them (in terms of importance) alongside the battle report 'heretic!' from white dwarf no187.
whomever wrote those peices can be justifiably proud of themselves!

The Ordo Reductor - the guy's who make wonderful things like the Landraider Achillies, but can't use them in battle..
The Tragic flaw vs nobility tension of the Blood Angels was compelling enough for me when I chose them as my first army back in 2nd edition. Of course I was also influenced by the 2nd edition box art.
The simple heroism of the footslogging guardsman helped make the IG my second army from 5th-6th edition, though the tanks were equally persuasive.
Nowdays it's hard for me to get behind any one factions fluff. I've found Abnet's writing -especially Eisenhorn and Ravenor- to be the most -and some of the only- really compelling storytelling in the 40k universe and it's mostly on an internal and interpersonal level. It has caused me to buy quite a few inquisitorial type figures over the years though.
The small blurbs about the Mordian Iron Guard in the 5th ed IG codex are what convinced me to get that particular army. Short they may be, but still awesome.

The Soul Drinkers books were fantastic.
It really highlighted the shades of grey that can happen within what seems a very black and white view of things by 40k characters.
It made me explore the Black Templars a bit more of how violent they would get and how big they are getting running the risk of Inquisition attention just for being too numerous and powerful.
Funny how little things like that (or bull-pup gun!) can do that.
This picture they changed the plasma-pistol to a combi but this metal guy is my favorite marine model:

Not to disrupt this line but I have a question. I recently fell in love with a battle sisters model. Now, I want to put her in my HQ as my medic. Can this happen with a good story line (fluff)? All positive and constructive criticism is more than welcome. All negativity will mess with the vibes.

if she's WYSIWYG it's golden by me.

I really liked the Tau Empire fluff dating back to the 4th Edition Codex. I loved the idea of a force that strikes and fades like ninjas. Terrain rules allowed that identity to be more apparent, but the jab and move of the Tau Empire as well as just them being the only good guys in the galaxy that has grown incrredibly dark and brooding was cool. Everyone was welcome in the Tau Empire, IG regiments were defecting to join them and they were more colonial than conquerers (as evidenced by their BattleFleet Gothic stuff as well as just their Kaizen approach to society. I really like playing them as the first and possibly last hope for humanity to find a new way to exist.
As long as the Emperor of Mankind is on the Golden Thron, it seems to me like he wont just be a beacon of hope but also a magnet for conflict. And that conflict has defined millenniums.
The harshness of the Imperium may be borne of centuries of warfare but its backwards facing vie on everything is just oppressive and dark. But a shining light comes from the Eastern Fringes...
