Currently, there's only a couple of guys at my LGS who play Necrons, but I'm wondering how that may change. I saw a new MWG bat rep with the new Necron force and they look fun, but not necessarily that intimidating.
Anyone who has played as them or played against them recently, how is the new book shaping up? OP, balanced, or underwhelming?

They got an overall boost. More on the powerful side than the nerfed side. Necron business will pick up for ya.

I think Necrons are really interesting for tournament play. They are strong yes but not that strong if you know that you are playing against them. But I think it will be quite hard to deal with Newcrons and the other tournament standard lists like Serpentspam, triple Riptides, Imperial Knights and so on. You need some quality firepower for the riptides, Knights and you need a massive amount of firepower for the necrons. So I think it will be difficult to get a list that really is a tournament level allcomer.

I'm sad though, my build got nerfed -- can't have multiple Crypteks with Veils of Darkness AND the Veil of Darkness was nerfed as well.
So sad :(

So is assaulting them an option? With MSS and Warscythes, I almost always avoided CC and just shot them. Now, assaulting them seems to be a good answer.

My friend assaulted me with 5 bloodcrushers. I tied combat, and then won the battle of attrition with only Imotekh (Non- cc character), a Lord, a Cryptek (none of which had a warscythe), and 9 warriors.
Just a fair warning. >.>

CC is not really the answer
I charged a squad of immortals with 24 boys(and 2 nobs) which was roughly 25 wounds(4 of which were powerklaw) and the immortals still tied me in combat.
I won 5 rounds later when I beat him by 1 and he failed his LD and got run down.
Close combat doesn't do as well as everyone thinks.

Yep, but they've always been choppy. I'm talking being able to assault regular Crons. I hated it in the previous codex because MSS always gaked me over.

Close combat against the crons is pretty effective. Sweeping them is virtually the only way to table them in short order. You are NOT knocking them off the table otherwise.
That's where new wraiths and flayed ones come in. To go in and bully the troops off the table, you have to get past their counter assault/support units, and those things took 10 character levels in badass recently.
I'm still the only person at our group to get a win against a decurion, and that involved crazy luck. Other than that they've been unstoppable here. Our cron players are having the time of their lives before we officially call their book a cheese-dex and people start turning down games.

That's annoying, but we'll see how they fair when I play against them

They're fine if you ban decursion and homerule reanimation protocols to work properly and not the way GW has written it. Otherwise, yep. People will deny games to crons after some time. They feel like early serp spam back then. Just nothing dies!

Note that lots of stuff has gotten much better. Tomb blades, flayed ones, shield guyz, shards. They're pretty much worth it even without decursion. Other stuff like flyers, anni barges, bargelords have been brought in line.
There's basically nothing bad in the codex. Some might argue about scarabs. But glancing/wounding on 6 ain't bad. They're probably overnerfed and are meh now. Not bad, however.
What breaks it is extra stuff like decursion. Ban it and you've got a strong codex. Allow it and you've got a broken codex.

I mean, it is strong, don't get me wrong, but I feel that banning that would be going to far. Banning certain models or supplements, maybe. Banning an army's own detachment is a bit much.

Why's banning superheavies fine and banning detachments not fine?

Because imo some super heavies should not be in regular games. But with all the codexes now getting their own special detachments, telling one army they just can't use it is isn't really fair. But then, might as well tell Eldar players they can't use wave serpents.

Probably, that's a reason why people dislike playing vs wave serpent spam in regular games. Cause they're op.
Same with decursion newcrons - they're op.
Anywayz, time shall tell.

And I think the Grey Knight detachment is rather borderline " OP", but I don't think they should ban it.

The Grey Knight detachment offers far fewer benefits, has no "formations within formations" shennanigans, and doesn't do anything the basic SM codex can't do (bring reserves in turn 1) really. They're also typically exceedingly limited in number.
We certainly haven't been seeing the trepidation and reports about Grey Knights that we are with Necrons.

Talk of banning or house rules should stay in reserve until opponents learn how to build/play against the Codex.

I am just glad i can play my infantry heavy Necron now.
Did not like the flying circus AT ALL...
I will not maximise anything, i rather just field lots.
And in regard as being OT and banning: this whole edition leads to more broken armies at tournaments as ever.
There are lots of combos that should be banned for being broken and, by now, extremely boring and irritating to play against.
This Necron codex is not the biggest problem...

I would say probably best way to dismantle is by killing the overlord. That will start its downfall, with no longer getting to reroll 1s on reanimation, or just use str. D weaponry.

If you didn't already hear yourself, having to resort to Str. D just to kill a codexes base detachment is rather silly. But yes, Overlords are a bit more oriented around support now, so killing them would help.
