Well, it's my birthday coming up and Mrs Moogy has just agreed to feed my addiction in the form of one of the following - Fellblade, Glaive, Falchion, Cerberus, Typhon or a Spartan Assault Tank.

The question is, which one and why?

Then, it's a case of deciding which of my armies it will go with.....My Space Wolves (currently at about 1850 points painted and will be the first one 'complete' at about 3000 points) or with my Dark Angels which will end up as the 3rd Company, the whole Deathwing, with a smattering of Ravenwing and Scouts.

Decisions, decisions...can the Dakka massive help out?

Good points!

I'm thinking if it was with my Wolves, something with a lot of boom.... my army is made with CC in mind (drop pods, deep striking termies and stormfangs) with only a few razorbacks and a squad of long fangs for anything of range.

If it was with the Dark Angels, then anything could be game. I think it would probably fit into my Deathwing more than the Greenwing though...

if it's for the dark angels - glaive

but i like the falchion most - its 12 hull points and re-rollable d-weapon roll are quite 'win' by my reconing.

I vote for the Spartan. Throw a bunch of Deathwing Knights or a full squad of Blood Claws+Characters in there and watch whatever it touches disintegrate.

Typhon, no question.

The Fellblade is decent, but not great at any particular task and costs a lot of points. The anti-infantry blast is underwhelming compared to the alternatives, and the anti-tank shot suffers from the 7th edition vehicle rules favoring mass HP removal instead of single powerful shots. Taking one won't cripple your army, but you'll probably have a lot of games where you wish you had a Typhon or non-LoW units instead.

The Glavie is not a legal choice in a 40k army, so don't even consider it unless you play 30k.

The Cerberus is just too many points for a unit with a very narrow role. It's brutal against enemy superheavies (by turning off their guns, not by killing them) but against anything else it sucks because of how few shots it gets. In big games where you can guarantee that there will be appropriate targets it's not a bad option, especially if you can take multiple LoW, but those situations are rare enough that IMO it's not worth spending a ton of money on one until you've got the more common alternatives.

The Typhon is amazing. STR 10 AP 1 no cover is great against any kind of infantry in any situation, and decent against vehicles. The short range is not much of an issue on a 6x4 table, so its "drawback" compared to other Apocalypse-scale units is negated. And, unlike some big expensive units, the Typhon is a straightforward "kill everything" tank that works in pretty much any army. So you don't need to worry too much about whether it's going to fit well with everything else you've got.

The Spartan is decent, but requires an army built around it. Most armies just aren't going to make good use of all that transport capacity, and unless you're delivering a death star you're spending too many points on a transport. Only buy one if you're willing to commit to making it work.

i realise that essentially FW has made the glaive 30k only, but from a fluff perspective the DA and salamanders are able to field them in M41.

obviously you 'd have to talk to your oppon.... blah, blah, blah - heres the experimental rules hidden in the FW website http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Downloads/Product/PDF/g/Glaive.pdf
it doesnt have it any more; but IIRC you had to take a master of the forge in order to field one as a DA player - i liked that. fluffy.

Don't just dismiss it as "blah blah blah", having to create house rules to be allowed to use your expensive new model is a really big problem. The OP gets one big tank, so it doesn't make much sense to waste it on something they'll need special permission to use.

It never did. The Glaive has never been available to 40k armies.

yeah it did, its first experimental rules allowed it for a few specific chapters to field it provided you also fielded a master of the forge. not any more though.

to me and my friends it IS as simple as 'blah blah blah' we've been doing it for years!

if one person has a super-heavy, the other person has a super-heavy - no big deal!

No it didn't. Some of the other 30k units have/had that rule, but the Glaive never did. I remember this because, like the Fellblade, it was originally a 30k-only unit and I was disappointed that the IA:Apocalypse book only added the Fellblade to 40k armies and left the Glaive out.

That's nice, but the OP doesn't play with you and your friends and saying "don't worry about it" is bad advice when getting to use your expensive purchase requires special permission and house rules. It's the equivalent of saying "don't worry if you play Tau, feel free to buy a Baneblade or terminator squad and blah blah blah legality".

Thanks for the thoughts guys and thanks for giving reasons for your opinions too.

As my Space Wolf army is the most complete (even if it will be the smallest one in the grand scheme of things) I've decided that whatever I get will be for them. They are played using 40k rules, so it must be playable. They are currently my 'go to' army when I manage to play a game and, in a couple of months, it will be fully painted.

The army is quite CC-orientated. It has 15 blood claws (with a storm wolf and Ulrik) , 20 Grey Hunters with CCWs (with pods) 15 termies, 3 CC termie lone wolves, 11 Fenrisian Wolves, 5 TWC, a cyber wolf and an IP on TWM) and only has 5 Long Fangs (with 4x MLs) and 2 Razorbacks (both las-plas) to deal out long ranged pain. For this reason, I'm thinking that the final decision is between a Fellblade, Typhon & Cerberus.

Time to do a bit more thinking!

Don't assume the OP thinks exactly like you and stop misrepresenting what I say. when I used the term 'blah, blah, blah', it was in assumption that everyone reading this knows how to ask permission from their opponent to use it and doesn't need a basic script to follow in order to negotiate.

I'm not sure what bit you today, but I'll thank you to keep it to yourself and not take it out on those around you.

In my experience most people want to play 40k/30k with/against nice models/armies; people who 'PLAY TO WIN!!' belong in tournaments, paying for the latest go-to army in an attempt to stave off the (apparently bitter) taste of defeat.
It's best that way - I play fluffy matches with friends and I don't have to deal with all the gaming clichés people seem to exhibit elsewhere (rules lawyering, 'that guy' syndrome, unit spam lists, etc, etc..)

Regarding use of super heavies - you don't need house rules when there are experimental ones from FW.

Every race has super-heavy options and apocalypse units - but you know what? it's a game, have fun! stop caring so much about winning - lighten up a bit!
I would accept tau using IG super-heavies because they assimilate rather than destroy; but terminators? nah, space marines wouldn't ally with tau - they're xenos and don't recognise the god-emperor.

Back on topic, I'm pretty damn sure the glaive was available to the dark angels in it's first experimental rules (imperial sanction not yet granted) because I tried to get my mate who collects dark angels to get one as his chapter's 'flag tank' because of the concession for them to use it in 40k. he refused on the basis of cost. (a bit rich from a guy who has an entire company+ of green guys)

Yes yes, you're the morally superior "casual at all costs" gamer and everyone who doesn't play the game the way you do doesn't understand how to have fun. Now can we not waste any more time on feeding your ego and stick to discussing the rules?

Regarding use of super heavies - you don't need house rules when there are experimental ones from FW.

Except, again, there are no experimental rules. The Glaive does not have rules that allow it to be taken in a 40k army. Even if it had them once in the past (which I still disagree with) it certainly doesn't have them anymore in the current rules, which are the only rules that are legal. Therefore anyone who wants to take one in a 40k army would have to ask negotiate a house rule that expands the list of armies that can take a Glaive.

Every race has super-heavy options and apocalypse units - but you know what? it's a game, have fun! stop caring so much about winning - lighten up a bit!

Ah yes, the traditional whine of the "casual at all costs" player: if you don't allow me to cheat and bring illegal units in my army then you care too much about winning, lighten up a bit!
