Opened a 40k assault squad and was wondering do you guys just glue what looks good to you and proxy the weapons? or should you magnetis everything and paint?

I'd magnetize the weapons that may change. You only need to actually paint the other weapons if you decide to start using them, but too many proxies in a game gets to be confusing for everyone.

A new day, a new time zone.

I just got enough of them that I could build the variants I'm most likely to use and not have to fiddle with magnets or misplacing little parts.

Pretty much this here. I like to paint, so I just paint some extra guys with other weapons to swap as the need arises. Plus, I have enough squads that in most games I'll run out of points before I run out of marines, so I can swap them around that way.

If you magnetise 'everything' it becomes unwieldy. I'd recommend to just magnetise things that might change depending on a loadout. Like special weapons and Sarge equipment.

However, there's a great thing about magnetising that you can create a multi-purpose unit. I'm currently working on boyz-stormboyz with rokkits on magnets. I don't really like painting models that much as it's so super time consuming, so, it's easier for me to make rokkits on magnets and paint 2 times less models! Since i don't field stormboyz every game, but there's always a place for boyz.

Maybe you could make a multi-purpose squad of asm/sternguard. Or something like this.

I like having models so I only bother magnetizing the big things. Carnifex and Hive Tyrants and such. If I want more Captains I'll buy the $14 model again and have the spare bitz. And considering I once built an Assault Squad out of all my spare Sergeants... I had a really bad habit of wanting more officers when I started 40k so I have dozens of sword dudes of various rank. Magnets are for vehicles, big creatures and things that keep falling off. Friggin Wave Serpent turrets.

Depends if I can be assed to do it. My Wraithguard aren't magnetized but one of my Dire Avenger squads has a fully magnetized Exarch. Then again, Wraithguard weapons are really samey looking so... not a priority.

I do both. I do try to magnetize when I can. Tactical marines, special weapon guys are easy to magnetize. Just one magnet for wrist and one for the weapon.

Sternguard? Hell no. I will proxy them but I proxy them using the same weapon across the board except for special weapons.

If you're that guy that models everyone with a bolter and tells me two are combi-melta, 2 are combi-grav and 2 are combi-flamers I'll punch you.

So I'm not rich like a lot of people here seem to be with their: "I just buy a model for every loadout I like" attitude.

I magnetize boxes that can be made into multiple units.
Things like Lychguard/Praetorians. Can you really justify spending €208, jut to be able to field a 10-man squad of every weapon variant when you can do the same for €52 + cost for magnets (which is about €10).

Sure when the time comes I want to field 2 10-man squads, I'll buy me another €52 + cost for magnets.

Also depends on your funds. Magnetising is way cheaper than purchasing another model.

Im use Magnets on larger things that i know i like the swap out.

In some cases like Mega Dreads they have 6 combinations and no way I would buy 6 of them.

for smallers figs I find it annoying to get the tony magnets on them so i usually dont bother.

If a box comes with enough models to have the basic members glued, I will.
But, kits like the Tempestus scions have a special weapon swap-out for each normal set of arms, so I had to do the lot.
I magged-up 3-4 of the 5-man box, for a serg and 2-3 specials. It was just easier to do them all after that.

For SM, I have a set of 5 models with 4 magnets per torso.
2 arms,
back,
head.
This way, they are devs, assault, veterans, sergeants, or just bolter grunts.
Poke around in my gallery for them.

I've only ever magnetised one model, a Hordes LoE Seraph/Neraph kit. I didn't do a great job. I can never really be bothered, I normally just leave bits unglued and hope a blob of blutac will hold it haha.

Tanks mainly. Infriantry I managed to be lucky and snag 20 ish spare marine bodies so I'm good if I need options added.

Larger models, like dreadnoughts and tanks, I'll use magnets.

For troops and HQ units, I just glue them.

I started magnetizing late in my modeling life, so most of my old stuff is glued. These days I magnetize a lot, but not everything.

I just put together some vanguard vets. They got both arms and backpacks done. The last batch of assault marines were similar, with packs swappable and the two special weapon marines gun arms magnetized. For them it was to future proof the minis. While I did make plasma pistols for them (I’ve got tons of spares) I’d never field them due to inefficiency and price. The flamers are going to be the in-use arm for a while. But, if the next edition changed the rules, or gave us the option for meltas, I’d be able to re-gear with little effort.

When I was making new sergeants for my tac squads, most of them just got the bolter arm done, with chainswords glued on the other arm. My sternguard sarge was the opposite though, he keeps his bolter, but can swap his CC weapon. I’ve got a few PA foot guys with both arms, but not many. For the most part special and heavy weapons are just built solid and swapped in from the spares shelf as needed.

I''ve magentized a couple Nid models (Carifexes and a Tyrannofex) purely for money savings purposes. And the Necron Scythe model begs to be magentized, so I did those up too.

But in general I dislike magentizing, and keeping track of the magnetized bits.

When I can afford to do so and feel the need to have access to the various weapons choices, I prefer to pick up multiple models.

A big reason to magnetise for me is to improve organisation and cut down on storage and transport problems. Storing 5 extra weapons per squad is much easier than 5 extra minis per squad.

For most things i glue in place. there are bits on vehicles and the like which can be left unglued.

For my knight magaera i left the head and phased plasma fusil and carapace hatch unglued but everything else has been set in place.

Vehicle turrets should rotate and the guns should have freedom of travel, but i decide what loadout my infantry have and glue it in place - make your bed and lie in it!! :]

The main thing I magnetize are vehicles, so that I can convert them into variants. The Rhino chassis in particular - I have 6 base chassis, and then enough magnetized bits to convert them into 6 razorbacks, or 3 predators, or 3 vindicators, or a whirlwind. I also have all the weapons bits to swap my Land Raiders between the various configurations (though one of them is a glued together Crusader, which is what I normally use in game).

Most of my HQ models are magnetized, as I'm always screwing around with their equipment.

I have a couple sergeants that are magnetized, but mostly I just keep extra sergeants in my case with extra combi-weapon options. I don't magnetize my special/heavy weapons dudes, I just have extra models in my case to cover all the options.

My Chaos stuff was a recent purchase from a friend, all of which is not magnetized. My first project with those is to get the HQ units magnetized.

I run Grey Knights, and have magnetized all of their hands and special weapon arms to allow hot swappng (which use to happen quite a bit). At the moment, Falchions and 1per5 Hammers are great, yet when I put these guys together, Halberds and 2per5 Hammers were great. Even my "keep them cheap" PA models benefited from magnets when they went from Swords and Psycans to Falchions, Flamers, and Personal Teleporters. Thankfully, I even magnetized my DKs for Gatling Psilencers, which I now run one of my guys with instead of the H. Incinerator (they both get H. Psycans, which used to be H. Incinerators). And yes, their hands are magnetized.

It's bit excessive, I know. However, when the new GK codex came out with no new models, yet with different weapon mixes, I was already in a great place for swapping out the bad for the good across the board without need a single new model. Got to love that!

There are certain models I've magnetized for weapon swaps, like broadsides. Other models I've magnetized for ease of storage/transport, like the DE Raiders.

However I don't magnetize infantry. Easier just to buy/build/paint more.
