Subject: How to destroy a Baneblade with Blood Angels?

Jealous that Horus is Warmaster

I am playing a game tomorrow with a friend who has a Baneblade, and I am wondering about the best way to destroy it. My initial thought was to use Thunder Hammer Terminators, but that may not be enough.
Any suggestions?

Agreed. Min-size-max-melta Assault Marines in a pod are your best bet. A 3-melta Command squad could also do it, as could combi-Sternguard.

Your opponent may not let you do that. It really depends on the point level.

Well the Baneblade's over 500pts itself, the only real worry is if they claim you tailored to beat them... however, a Baneblade with ANNIHILATE Blood Angels, so it's kind of a lose-lose scenario. LOW shouldn't be permitted in regular 40k is all I'm sayin'...

There's also bubble wrap concerns. A squad and a couple well-placed Chimeras and the party's over. The drop pod model is pretty big.

Im actually finding that in terms of getting around bubble wrap, dante with 2x5 or 3x5 tri melta asm squads with jump packs is better than 3 pods. Making your opponent wait til turn 2 on his bubble wrap presents some awkward scenarios for him, particularly with adequate terrain. If you move correctly to force him to move his baneblade in order to get a decent shot, he'll probably break his bubble wrap for you.

I think losing a turn of shooting on the baneblade is worth keeping it alive. Yes, it's a minor victory for the BA, but at a cost.

What about Dreads with Power fist for S10. Drop enough and he'll struggle to kill them all.
Or a 10man squad of Vanguard Vets, all with melta bombs?

The problem with assault options is that the Baneblade can move 12" every turn without sacrificing any shooting, so it can run away faster than you can move to catch it. So you have to spend a ton of points to surround it and cut off all of its escape options, and then the Baneblade gets more points for bubble wrap. Plus, with the vanguard vets you're dropping a nice expensive MEQ squad in perfect template formation right next to a tank that is very good at removing MEQs from the table. An effective counter to a Baneblade (or any other superheavy) really needs to be able to do some damage as soon as it arrives, and that means mass melta, not melee.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

I believe a Stormraven could be the solution. Dropping in a terminator assault squad and a death company dread, so that no matter how hard he tries he can't get away in time, and the ensuing assault kills the tank.

That involves Stormravens carrying stuff. We all know how that ends.

2nd for the Stormraven. The baneblade itself stands little chance of downing a flyer, so it's likely to survive unless he pumped up some decent anti air with the rest of his list.
And among the things that a raven could carry, hammernators are a good choice, and also have a great chance of living through a crash, should one happen.
So come on with the raven, dive straight at the tank, empty all your weapons, jink on his turn, then drop to hover and let the hammers finish off the tank. Should work pretty well for less than the cost of the tank itself.

Played the game with some destructive results!
5 man assault squad dropped in with a drop pod on the first turn (I went first) the 2 meltas and 1 infernus pistol were in melta range all of them penetrated and two of the rolls got 5's meaning an extra 2d3 of hull points, I rolled a 5 and a 6 bringing the total damage up to nine hull points! the same amount of the Baneblade!!
This may have been my finest moment in 40k, blowing up a Baneblade on the first turn with a 120 Point unit!

Ha. Awesome. That's a hell of a return on an investment. What else was in his list? Did you play the game through to the end? And what was the mission.
An indication of both lists would also be good.
