Ah right- not read much into the Flesh Tearers, but having lexicanum'd him just now he sounds pretty nuts lol.

Just being a Flesh Tearer makes him nuts!

Interesting to see how he is being affected by his macabre duty, and I think the Astorath profile suits him well.

It probably would be quite upsetting to most people to see so many of your friends go nuts over 250yrs of service. More so if you're Dante since he's practically the oldest living loyalist space marine (not counting dreadnoughts)

Well. I don't think I am entering this guy as I have a Marine I need to do but, if real life gets in the way I will. (I am painting him and the contest marine up on the 14th.)

I dread your oncoming reactions.

Spoiler:

As for my entry, here he is before I strip him. To get a start. (He's been horribly overwashed since then. He looks like he rolled in ash or tank grease so he needs it.)

That's a friggin sweet dreadnought! Reminds me of the Dawn of War intro actually, where the Dreadnought snaps an Ork boy in half with his power fist.

Dang mate. You were so close to guessing my inspiration! My mother must have been a great glass maker, as I guess I am too transparent. "I have come to destroy you." Whoosh~ (That gets me every time, and the "Strike from the skies brothers!" sends chills.)

It was from this trailer in DOW2. Oh hey, turns out the dread does it in both intros... I guess you are right then!

Edit: I put my Marine entry into the post above these two.

My mediocre painting ability is matched only by my crappy photography skills. But here we go anyway. Now with a feeble attempt to white balance!

I’m calling him done.

(Different angles over in my blog)

While I painted him in much the same style as his squad mates there were two things I did differently. One was a simple mechanical thing. I had recently picked up an offset paint scraper/spatula thing, which I used on the baseing. So much better then the old, dull hobby knife I previously used to smear the flock/glue paste around. Right tool for the job, makes a difference. The other thing I did was actually blending paints. I mostly paint straight from the pot, no mixing. With the other HG, I did a little blending, where I mixed the two shades I used for the tabard to get a mid tone to help with the transition. For this guy I actually used a palette with a dollop of both colors and mixed them progressively to generate a much wider selection of shades, which I blended on the tabard while still wet. I’m quite happy with the results.

I've finished Captain Karlaen.
I'll post pictures of him closer to the 31st.

Looks pretty great to me, Nev! The golds are amazing, and the extra effort on the tabard certainly paid off! The whole squad on your blog look awesome together!

Is it just those 2 pics you want to submit as 'final', or did you want any of the other angles as well? You're allowed up to 4 pics to show the model off, so if you want me to include any other angles then just let me know!

(or you could paint something else to fill up the other 2! Still plenty of time left! You mentioned something about a Dreadnought, I believe?)

Don't be too harsh Nev. The base turned out great, and the colors are smooth.

I don't think it is late? The contest is for march? Also a red base is a cool idea, I should have done that with my BA. I could have given them red acrylic bases with icons on them or laser etch.

Anyways, I am not painting the dread, or either of the marines till the 14th.

Correct me if I am wrong though. (I hope I am not though...)

Nevelon, I think you are being way too harsh with your painting skills. Granted, they aren't golden daemon level, but they are nothing to sneer at! That marine looks damn good!

Pretty sure we have till the end of March. I wouldn't think anything would really be late till the last week or so, and even then, the scope of this project is potentially relatively small.

Thanks for the kind words. I’m generally happy with the table-top quality I produce. My humor tends to run on the self-depreciating side, so I sound more down on myself then I feel. One of the reasons I started my blog is to show what the “average joe” can do. It’s easy to get intimidated my what some of the people here on dakka can crack out. But 95% of what I do is just base/wash/drybrush, which are basic skills that anyone can learn. And once you get a handle on them, getting an army that is quite presentable is just a mater of perseverance.

Para, I might take this opportunity to experiment with my camera and get some more pictures. If not, I might select more of them to officially submit, or just run with those two. Still have a few weeks to decide. As for the dread, he is perpetually lurking on the “things to paint” zone. But right now I’m on a filthy xenos Eldar kick, so I want to ride that momentum while it lasts. It’s always easy to fall back on marines.

My lovely grabby faced Hive Tyrant entry may be replaced by my upcoming Legion Praetor for my Imperial Fists assuming all of the components arrive in time. The base model is going to the the NL Sevatar model to frame a much darker Imperial Fist character (Captain of the 66th).

Soon his foes would learn that the only thing more dangerous than a savage three hundred pound brute is a savage three hundred pound brute with a plan - Ork Codex

Well, I don't even play marines, but all of these entries inspired me to get to work on a personal project.

Proof:

My friend graciously gave me a spare terminator he had, but I also might need to him to graciously lend me some paints. I was hoping to paint this guy up as an Ultramarine, but I have no blues in my collection.

There's some great stuff here, some people really know how to get the most out of their paints

I worked on my Chapter Master today, he's pretty much finished except for the base:

I also managed to paint his face exactly the way I wanted it to be, good thing I picked up a decent detail brush not too long ago

So, what do you guys think?

Nice work fella. Lovely rich sahde of purple. Face came out really well too. The yellow piping could maybe use a little backshade and then a lemon edge highlight. Its a little flat the now. Great fig and great job though

Looks great to me! The purple armour and the face are great!

If you are up to it and want to take this guy to the next level, try adding some freehand scrollwork in white to break up the large areas of armour. Going by his eyes, you have the brush skill to do neat work on that and it would really take the mini above and beyond.

2 down, 3 to go.
ok folks - opinion time. Am now onto Deathwing member #3 - Brother Varhmiel. Acc to the fluff (DV novella) Varhmiel was a longtime member of the Ravenwing. As the Varhmiel and Narcariel figs are duplicates in the set I want to hint at Varhmiel's Ravenwing past and so set him apart from his identical squad member. Thinking of giving him a jet black right pauldron or knee piece in honour of his Ravenwing days - thoughts?

Hmm, I never thought of what would happen if a Ravenwinger was promoted to the First Co. A black armour panel would certainly do it, maybe the shoulder pad or the Power Fist casing?

Uh... my coffinboxius er, dreadnought brosicarius is glued shut. (Plus he is just over a pound lol, pesky metal model.) Should I worry about that if I only need to spray the coffin and shoulders? I guess should just mask all of him off except for the white sections now that he is glued solid.

It is the little things I notice in other people's work (how they go about it,) that reminds me of tutorials or random tricks I have seen and saves me a lot of trouble I have noticed.
