My fave is the handwritten box labeled, 'label makers', personally.
Dumb thing is, absolutely no other scenes take place in this store room. It's an establishing shot of how poorly I planned things.

Previews are at https://pdfcomic.tumblr.com/post/182728103335/comic-preview-planetary-defence-farce-01-text rather than try and host them on Dakka, and upset the gallery feature with my phone

I've been enjoying working on them but I want 4 done before I launch fully so there's a backlog for when I'm inevitably sick and miss a due date.

Awww, thank you. '

I was hoping to be more active but I had surgery and then later caught Covid so it's been a big month.

WIP of Quartermaster Kate.
She was originally nicknamed 'Kate' because I wanted to find examples of hair buns that were both practical and stylish... Kate Middleton was the best reference.
She kept the name because there are a LOT of badass Kates in the 40K and LGBT community.
The scribbled seal on her hand is the seal of Planetary Defense Force / Planetary Governor, which means her bionic was funded by the local Administration upon becoming quartermaster.
She usually wears gloves because it's cold in the storeroom.

You're pretty good at drawing hands. I find its not always easy to get it to look right so I appreciate a well proportioned hand, mechanical or otherwise.

I always start with those bean knuckles and work outwards, and add sausages.

Sometimes, I cheat, and I think you might see a bit (and Christ this is going back some years) of Horrible Histories style shorthand illustration when people are at a distance.

Very very nice. You've really got this character art style down well.

She looks a sweet character. Some really neat subtle detail going on here. The beads on her hairnet. That little angle in her back. She's actually come on a way from the picture above with the cups of tea. She almost doesn't look herself in that picture now.

And I love how the Aquilla on her hat is almost just a trapezoid block but is still somehow recognisable.

Thank you so much!

And yeah, restyling the Aquila has been a key part of the character design, so I'm glad you picked up on it.
Making something simple to draw but recognisable (and less iron eagle) when there's a crowd was important.

I'm genuinely concerned that the upshot of this prank is a couple of summary executions. That bucket is comically overfilled, with heresy!

Also Smith's pointy Xenos ears! MOAR heresy!
That's the kind of heretical mutation that should make any inquisitive commissar question what Quartermaster Kate is hiding inside that prosthetic. Especially when she does that clearly heretical blue psy-spark thing that makes her eyes sparkle with he incipient glow of unsanctioned witchcraft. ALSO heresy!

It starts with a bucket prank, it ends in EXTERMINATUS!

Sorry, went to a dark place there. The grim darkness of the far future where there is only war, to be exact.

They are setting up for combat situational awareness/ambush detection drills. Hopefully. Less likely to cop a bolt pistol round for those then pranks and shenanigans. Not a zero chance, but much lower.

Actually no it's just shading and I am very bad at drawing buckets. I have the same fear of giving someone a concussion from a full metal bucket.

I don't know what you're referring to. Nope, not at all. Nobody else seems to have noticed, either.
(People keep saying, "Oh it's the PDF, of course they don't notice." but there is actually a serious reason that everyone deliberately turns a blind eye to the sole Eldar in the room. It takes a while but it is actually touched on.)

Haha, honestly that artwork is the ONLY time that spark pops up, she can't actually taser people. I just wanted to distract from the big lesbian energy I accidentally injected into the pose.

Shortage of replacement men one reason they're gonna end up doing drill rather than fertilising the base's allotment.

So are you writing feverishly in the background with a plan to sometime drop a load of that sweet sweet prose on us? Or are you all-web-comic-all-the-time-ing this one?

Kate comment had me in stitches but I don't want to hijack the thread with it. I'm actually interested in how you're thinking about a character with a prosthetic. It presents some interesting challenges and opportunities to explore. I don't know anyone with less than optimum limbs so I've rarely ever encountered some of the social or physical issues that must come with that.

Or maybe in a dark future where there are a billion new and exotic ways to lose a limb it becomes less uncommon?
It's funny that you imagine private medical benefits existing in the grimdark beurocracy of the imperium's PDF's. Why shouldn't they, I suppose. I always suspected the ONLY war part was hyperbole.
PS- Smith is a great name for an undercover space elf.

It'll be fully told in comic form, but that's not to say I'm above answering questions.

Misappropriation of funds in the local PDF is a big part of the issues the cast face, and I realise that I hadn't shared this explanatory intro panel.

Kate was born without her lower arm, as the pollution of her city was so high. Her parents had to choose between paying for her education or paying for a bionic, and they chose to send her to be trained in a hope that it would lead to a more independent future.

The character pic looks great all finished up. The font in that intro panel is not good though. It's very difficult to read.

I like the set up of the story though. Very mundane in a potentially crazy universe.

It’s actual handwriting, I guess I may have to transcribe it or find another use for it.

That’s handwritten? Impressive.

Honestly, in 40k I expect text to be a little hard to read. Adds to the charm. I’d not want all the dialogue to be that level, but for chapter intros and the like I think it adds a lot of character and flavor.

That is Magnus the red without a head or pants.

I've done him in a bronzed copper colour rather than lobster red which is why it's even harder to understand what you're looking at.
