Apparently, there was actually some very strict rules set forth for this cartoon. Which is still one of my favorites.

https://www.yahoo.com/tv/chuck-jones-road-runner-rules-112898494205.html

1) The Road Runner cannot harm the Coyote except by going Beep Beep

2) No outside force can harm the Coyote, only his own ineptitude or the failure of his ACME products

3) The Coyote could stop at any time - If he were not a Fanatic. (Repeat: A Fanatic is one who redoubles his effort when he has forgotten his aim - George Santayana)

4) No dialogue ever, except Beep Beep

5) the Road Runner must stay on the road. Otherwise he could not logically be called a Road Runner.

6) All action must be confined to the natural environment of the two characters- The southwest American desert.

7) All materials, tools, weapons, or mechanical conveniences must be obtained from the ACME corporation.

8) Whenever possible, make gravity the Coyote's greatest enemy.

9) The Coyote is always more humiliated than harmed by his failures.

Number 4 is wrong. There has been at least one segment featuring the two with Wile E. Coyote discoursing(Adventures of the Road Runner).

I believe that was one episode with Bugs Bunny. These rules are only for the Road Runner segments.

Nope, check my edit. It was a "film"(later broken up into three episode segments) that was originally going to be a pilot for their spin-off.

#5 doesn't seem correct. I'm sure I've seen him running across the bare desert.

And on cliff tops to go "Meep. Meep." at the Coyote who would then fall to his non-demise.

But let's not forget the coyote was an awesome artist, his tunnel paintings were amazingly realistic. He could have made a fortune selling paintings.
