As I said do they do this? I've read quite a few different battle novels and short stories and I haven't come across a librarian falling to the black rage and being put in the Death company. It sounds like it would be super dangerous cause they are already at the mercy of the warp. What would happen when they go berserk with their witch powers?

Emm... Mephiston?

Mephiston (before being Mephiston, he was Calistarius) fell and was placed into the Death Company on Armageddon. That's the only actual fluff reference I can think of either way.

Actually page 53 of the 7th Codex on the right hand side of the description for Librarian, it states near the bottom of the description,

"The Librarians of the Blood Angels are perhaps closer to their Primarch than any, yet still they stand remote from their battle-brothers. After all, should so powerful a psyker fall to the Flaw, the destruction caused would be grievous indeed. Thus the Librarians are watched cautiously lest they fall from grace into damnation."

Back on Page 7 under A TROUBLED LEGACY it also says

" The power of the Blood Angels Librairans flows from the Chapters conflicted duality. blah blah blah blah blah. It is to the Blood Angel's credit that these formidable psychic abilities remain under their control and are used purely for the good of the Imperium at large.

Also on page 7,

"Now it is not unheard of for whole formations to plunge into madness,..." more stuff.

Page 21 under ALL PERVADING TRAGEDY

The Black Rage is a spiritual Sickness, a malady from which no scion of Sanguinius is safe. Just as rank and file battle-brothers can fall to the curse, so too can vehicle crew, the commanders of the Chapter, and even the Revenants that pilot the Blood Angels Dreadnoughts.

blah blah blah blah blah some more. "However whispers circulate of the Blood Angels blackest days, of those rare occasions on which whole strike forces have fallen into madness en masse." Blah blah blah blah more blah. " That these conflicts largely ended in crushing victory for the Imperium is small consolation given the price paid by Sanguinius' sons in both lives and honour."

Anywho, there's plenty of circumstantial evidence to believe that Librarians fall just like anyone else does. As stated in their actual entry however, they're probably watched more closely than the typical battle bro. I wanna say I read more somewhere, maybe as far back as the 3rd codex, but I just can't remember right at the moment.

Oh and a on a neat side not, page 30 under 676.M40 A BLOODY REVERSAL, there's a story about a full strike force falling to the rage, going down under a greenskin tide, then being rescued at the last minute by the Elysian 46th Airborne. A Captain Alenso, honours the Colonel who rescued them afterward, so it's also apparent that the rage can come and go, or maybe be used up or something. Regardless, Captain Alenso would have to have emerged from the Rage to even be able to be rescued.

That scene refers to the Red Thirst, which has varying strength and can come and go based on the situation, but can also eventually take hold completely. The Black Rage comes with little or no warning and doesn't let go, in 10,000 years Mephiston is the only one we know of to overcome the Black Rage.

@OP: Something that is missing from the 6th edition codex is that the Librarians take it upon themselves to watch each other for signs of the Black Rage, and will cut the fallen one down immediately due to the danger of their powers. This however seems to be an unwritten rule among the Librarians themselves and isn't a chapter-wide standing order. We can assume that in Mephiston's case there simply weren't any other librarians around to do the deed when he fell.

One would also guess that they don't keep Death Company waiting for very long, especially not a Librarian who is even more dangerous than the "normal" DC. Those that succumb on campaign get to paint their armor black and die in combat, others are probably put out of their misery unless there's a battle coming very soon.

Any Blood Angel can fall to the Black Rage. Librarians included.

Its also not about "allowing" people into the Death Company. Its something that just happens. Its basically a mental disease. When you go crazy, you go crazy. You get your armor painted black and are made to vent your madness on the enemy, afterwards if you actually survive you are either put down or put in stasis to wait for the next battle.

The way blood angels would 'not allow' someone into death company is if they fell to black rage and they were so dangerous they had to be instantly euthanized (normally a marine with black rage would be contained until he can be released as a shock trooper to die in glorious battle).

Lemartes is still in the grip of the Black Rage. Mephy is the only one to break free of the Black Rage by non artificial means. Rafel was also in the BR but that was due to injecting himself with blood from the one of the Chalices. They put him in a coffin and distilled it out of him again.

Now, we like big books. (And we cannot lie. You other readers can’t deny, a book flops open with an itty-bitty font, and a map that’s in your face, you get—sorry! Sorry!)

Yes, everyone affected by the black rage is entered into the death company. If you want an example of a librarian in the death company, then check out Mephiston.
