For many, that simply will not do. And I dont blame them. Remember that these are game pieces, and not necessarily works of art. You may turn them into works of art, but you may also do the same with a toilet seat, if you please. You are encouraged to make the models look nice, but you really dont have to, and many will not.

Imagine if Monopoly had a line of paints sold separately to paint the pewter game pieces. Just food for thought.

Pro painted is probably the best way to find garbage that you can haggle down through messages for cheap.

I disagree. While the game time to prep time is fairly small in wargaming, there are many hobbies for which the "event" aspect of the hobby is almost always shorter than the preparation that goes before it.
-Model Airplane clubs. Generally your flight time ends up being much less than the amount of time you spend building, fixing, modifying, etc.
-Scale Model clubs. Generally your public display times are far more than the amount of time spent building and painting the models.
-Auto racing. Man hours of prep vs actual race time.
etc, etc…

This hobby is only unique in that lots of participants don't mind playing with unfinished models.

Yeah, I'm totally with you here Eilif.

In my youth, I was competed in (legal) auto slalom racing in modified superstock class, and the hours (days) of prep for a seconds-long run blows the ratio out of the water. Heck, the ratio of time spent walking the course compared to driving it is many multiples. And one set of tires would set you back enough to buy 40k models for a pretty long time, never mind a trailer to transport them, or a flatbed and pickup truck to tow the non-street legal car and/or tires.

You could also put pet shows on the list -- we have a championship cat, and the amount of effort and time choosing/breeding a kitten, compared to the competition time is miniscule.

Equestrian also is also care-heavy. You need to spend much more time caring for your horse than riding (never mind competing, if that's your thing).
