So I'm getting into this game because I love the models, but never really asked... Is this an extremely complicated game? I see a lot about data cards, supplements, Fw models etc. I'm ok if it's a game to grow into, but it seems like a lot to look at in the beginning lol.
As a frame of reference, I played warmachine for 3 years

If you've figured out Warmachine 40k is going to be pretty easy. The problem by comparison is that 40k's got badly-written/unclear rules in a way Warmachine doesn't; sometimes there aren't clear answers to what a given rule actually does and you have to make some leaps of logic that may be different from the leaps someone else made.

at the beginning, it is no where near that complex, FW models, supplements, and most datacards (unless you run a psyker) can be ignored if you don't use them. If you have 3 years of warmachine, you will be fine. Admitedly, there is a bit of a learning curve when you first start, but so does everything

When you first play, it can be kind of tedious. Best to have someone who knows how to play to play with you.
But you'll get the hang of it eventually

It can get very complicated very quickly if you let it, but it doesn't have to be.
One of the hardest things about 40K is self-control. It is very, very tempting to but a larger army all at once because it's awesome to have, but that's where things get complicated. My recommendation: either join an escalation league or start one yourself, and begin at 500 points then increase by 250 points every two weeks or so. That way you'll really get to learn about the units you are using and you will gain insight into your opponents units. If you can't do that then just follow the escalation mindset and limit yourself to 500 points at first, play some games and get that painted, then move on in 250 point chunks.
If you try to start out with a big army, dataslates, formation etc. It's still not impossible to learn by any stretch, it'll just take you longer to learn what your army is capable of and it will also be pretty intimidating to build and paint. To be fair, though, every time I start a new army I tend to go big. It's just not advisable to do so

It can be extremely complicated. Datacards, supplements and FW aren't needed and can enhance your gaming experience if you want them to. All you need to play is your codex an HQ and two troops. What army are starting with? This can make it much more complicated.

Awesome, thanks guys. I've been slowly building up a Khorne themed CSM force and it really hit me when the necron set came out (models, data cards codex and a lot of talk about imperial armor book) just how much extra stuff there can be lol. Good for nectar Khorne cares not for magic

Datacards, supplements, Imperial Armour, Formations, even down to other armies can all be learned over time. The core game can be broken up into what you need to know for your army and what you don't need to worry about yet. Sounds stupidly obvious but I swear I have a point.
Learning just the rules that apply to you, and as a Khorne player that means Movement, Shooting, Assault because Khorne isn't a Psyker army, you can be on the table in days with a decent idea of what to do. Your opponent, if they are a stand up person and don't want to cheat and that is the vast majority of people, will let you know if they have an ability when they use it. They won't warn you beforehand but you ask, chances are they'll give you a down and dirty explaination of whatever special rule they are invoking. So you don't need to know their rules. Just yours. Keeping Wargear simple to start means you won't have much to remember either. As you gain experience, you add in a Chainaxe or seven, a Black Mace, a Rhino or Land Raider, now you should be learning transport rules and vehicle rules. It becomes very natural learning the new things because again, you're just learning what you need to know.
It's when you know what you need to know that you look to expand the game. Formations, allies, flyers, breaking the huge amount of information down into bite size chunks until you're adding in the rules of the army you face most, the things you want to get from Imperial Armour, the synergy with X and Y to bounce rules back and forth and end up with some superpowered beast untouchable because of careful model placement.

I suggest going through the big rulebook, and watching a couple video on youtube (I suggest Miniwargaming, they do awesome vids). From there, it's Codex time for the army you choose, and you start with the hobbie.
1-Read rulrebook, watch video
2-Pick army, get codex
3-Buy an HQ, 2 troop
4-Enjoy

Awesome! Well I'm trading off an unused warmachine army to get the following CSM set:
1 unit of CSM
25 cultists
5 terminators
Mauler fiend
Hellbrute
Chaos lord
Templates and scatter die
A few of the slaanesh demon cav
A few of the Khorne dogs
Seems like a good start, I'm planning on toning things down to 500 to learn and build from there
Oh and I have the digital rulebook!

Have fun in the hobby!
You seem to have all the model require to actually explore most of the rule. If you play with someone who know the rule, don't be shy to stop them and check the rulebook whenever you arent sure about a rule. Getting all the rule shove up your throat is not the best way to learn the game!

You actually have models from two armies there. The daemons, Khorne dogs and Slannesh Calvary I think you abbreviated? I think they're Seekers? They're both Daemons so you can just set them aside for a while. Other than that, you have a pretty good start to try quite a few things out.

You should be fairly well-equipped; CSM function best in combination with Daemons (they both plug holes in each others' lists), and you may want some Bloodletters so you can actually use the Seekers and the Flesh Hounds.
You're missing some central tools for larger games but at 500-750 you shouldn't have trouble unless you're playing hypercompetitive donkey-caves.

Lol, thanks guys!
Yea the deamons will sit on the side for a while (unless that new Khorne dex includes them ) but I'll keep it pretty simple at first. I've also been learning fantasy on the side and a lot of the basics seem pretty similar which is helpful.

At the risk of complicating things (and being somewhat counterproductive), if you are looking to play pure Khorne but mix Demons and CSM, then you might want to buy the new Khorne Demonkin codex that is coming out this weekend (pre-order, released next week). It doesn't have all the other-God stuff, but does have its own rules, Khorne Demons and Khorne CSM in one book, so will be cheaper than buying both books. Here's a link to the rumour thread about it, this should give you an idea of what to expect from the army:

Yea that's what I was referring to in my post, the new Khorne codex. I'm pretty stoked, despite the fact that I'm sure they will be trying to sell me at least 3 bloodthirsters per page
