So I just picked up a sternguard box set, I have plenty of combi-melta marines I use as sternguard but I wanted all the bits that come with Stern and the Grav weapons. So I have never used grav weapons before, do you run them in a full tactical squad? Say a grav gun and grav pistol or do you do grav gun and combi grav? How does the grav pistol do for most things? I know the heavier the armor the better, can a grav pistol imobilize a land raider like a grav centurion can?

grav guns are best put on space marine bikers, because that way they can move and still fire 3 times per gun without having to lose a shot and half their range because bikers have relentless

on tac squads it is suboptimal because it only has 18" range. But if you know you'll be facing grey knights or deathwing, then its also good on tacticals, in fact even better than plasmaguns since while you lose 6" range, you fire thrice when stationary instead of only once or twice with risks of overheat.

now when it comes to pistols, I think a grav pistol is a better option than a plasma pistol because there is no chance of overheat and they both do a good job of wounding scary stuff while putting a single wound on light infantry or not ultimately doesnt make any difference

Grav weapons are salvo. So unless you are relentless or don't have to move into range they usually have a problem.

The main units I have seen tote grav weapons are;
1) gravgun Bike units - Relentless
2) combi-grav Bolter Scouts - Infiltrate into range
3) combi-grav Legion of the Damned sarge
4) Grav Cannon - Dev Centurions

I imagine grav guns could actually work okay on scouting TAC squads in rhinos if you play one of those chapters.

If you don't have relentless, the moment you move its stops being worth it because you loss shots and range

That's why the only people with it are bikes and centurions because they have relentless (or SnP in the cents case

You count as having moved when you arrive from deep strike.

LotD, due to being lost in the warp for thousands of years, do not have access to grav weaponry - it is an STC mankind discovered long after the Fire Hawks were sucked into the warp.

Except their Sargents have the option to take combi-gravs

I am a proponent for the theory that the LotD are a manifestation of the imperial faith in the emperor and astartes and are thus similar to daemons. As such they can have any weapons the astartes have.

Also grav weapons exist in 30K.
