Spawn of Chaos

Hey all,

to try and keep myself motivated I decided to hold myself to keeping a painting log. I have a bad habit of painting lots, but finishing little. I haven't played a game in years, but really want to get back into it, and if I want to do that, I'll actually have to *finish* something for once.

So here we are.

The beginnings of my Legion of Chaos, first onto the painting block is the Nurgle host of Rust Keep.

————————————————————————

"The crumbling fortress of Rust Keep sits atop a vast rocky outcrop far to the south of the Ironblood Hills. Bbelow it's red walls slaves labour in great strip mines, scratching away at the iron-rich soil to gather ore and rare deposits of warpstone to fuel their masters machinations. By day, the castle itself is deathly silent, appearing to be deserted were it not for the thousands of mortal lives toiling, and ending, in it's shadow."

"At night, however, is when the true horror of Rust Keep's denizens is revealed. Pestilent furnaces blaze and plague vats boil above lurid green hellfires, spilling their contents down into the catacombs beneath the keep, and covens of sorcerers gather to summon Grandfather Nurgle's foulest, and most beloved, children."

"It is on the blackest nights that the Dark Master rises from his living flesh-throne. When this happens three things are certain to come to pass. Mortals will die, plague will spread and the Bloody Flux will march to war."

————————————————————————

First up, a wip of the excellent nurgle chaos lord model. You'll have to forgive the less-than-great photography of this first post, these were taken late at night on an iPhone.

Warrior block:

These guys are almost finished. My aim is to get a finished "clean" unit, and then when I've done a bit more experimenting, go back and add some weathering/nurgliness.

I also got to this point and decided to finalise a basing scheme. Having just bought some Vallejo rust pigments, i wanted to see how these could be used in the basing and came up with this:

The rust colour is a bit brighter in real-life, and this is what kicked off the idea behind the fluff for the army. A rocky landscape rich in iron ore leaking through the cracks.
I'm very much a fluff/background player, so building the story really will help keep me focussed and help me decide what to buy and paint.

Warriors awaiting new bases:

This was a rather nerve-wracking step, ripping them off the old bases that had sand gel applied, and get them ready for new ones. Luckily there were no casualties, and only a few minor paint chips to touch up. These bases also still have 2 more colours of pigments to go yet. I took some photos of the process which I can upload as a mini tutorial if anyone is interested.

Now, onto the even more work-in-progress stuff.

I have a maggoth lord (Orghotts Daemonspew) primed and ready to go on my workbench, which has left me with ample spare parts as anyone who has the kit knows.
Luckily I managed to score a ton of spare Chaos chariot sprues on ebay, which has given me lots of good stuff for future conversions, but first off I wanted to see how I could create something useable from the left over characters.

So combining Bloab Rotspawned with one of the chaos chariot steeds gave me this for a mounted sorcerer of Nurgle.

And finally for a foot sorcerer, the Dark Vengeance cultist champion lightly converted.
I'm thinking of using him as a death sorcerer so not going to nurgle-ify this one, but will probably create some greenstuff 'spell' shooting from his outstretched hand.

————————————————————————

Feedback on anything and everything is appreciated. Looking forward to hearing what people think.

Thanks for looking!

I'm a big fan of your Warriors' paintjobs. You did a great job of applying a neat, clean coat of green without losing any Nurgle-ness(?). I'm fond of your bases, too. They're bold, but not too OTT. It's good to see another returning WHFB player. I had my first game in five or six years back in February.

Gotta ask, where did you find that photo for your fortress?

(not crying foul in any way, shape, or form. i think it's awesome and am merely curious)

Very clean paint job, even for Nurgle!, they're going to look great.

I would somehow remove the saddle on the mounted sorcerer of Nurgle, seems odd.

Cheers mate Glad you like. I'm thinking I'll keep them pretty clean (apart from any skin, like on the lord) as this army won't be mono-nurgle so I don;t want part of the army heavily weathered and the rest not.
I'm really looking forward to my first games when I've got enough painted.

No worries about crying foul! Glad you like them (wasn't sure how things like them would go down when I posted them). I created the images myself, as I was coming up with the fluff I wanted an image to help me visualise the environment. I'm planning on creating others as I go.
I put together a quick selection of some of the images that form the basis of it. I'm a graphic designer so photo manipulation can form a big part of the day job on occasion.

Thanks! Yeah I'm planning too, thinking of shaving it off and replicating the armour plates along the back, or maybe some saddle bags full of vials of disease, hmm...

Yesterday was my birthday, and so today my ever-supportive girlfriend and I popped into GW to pick up some new recruits for the horde...

How she puts up with my plastic-crack habit I'll never know...

I must admit, I wasn't a huge fan of the skullreapers/wrathmongers on release, but now I've had a proper look through the sprues, I think they are excellent, the GW paint jobs and the massive, slightly-silly weapons don't help, but theres a full set of un-mutated(?) weapons in there for the skull reapers which I much prefer.

As always, thanks for looking!

haha, yeah, was just being clear.
not gonna lie, was hoping you were a fellow rock climber. i don't quite recognize that very cliff, but i'm decently sure that it's the scarface buttress, and that i've climbed one of the formations in the background (the bridger jacks).

if you are curious, here are some more photos of what i think is your cliff: (sorry, dunno how to hyperlink properly on here)

in this first photo, pretty sure yours is the one in the middle:

yours is the close one i think here:
http://www.summitpost.org/indian-creek-utah/678872

regardless, hope you find that interesting.
there is a cliff further down the line called "the cliffs of insanity" that you could probably integrate really well into your army.

These really really cool, I shall follow with interest. Love the "clean nurgle" and also the bosses. I think the sorcerer will look great with an added hand flame/magic think. Can't wait to see him painted.

Haha the closest I've come is some indoor wall climbing a few years ago, you're a braver person than I! Those pictures are great, thanks. I'll take a look out for more around that area, see what my imagination can come up with and glad you like the plog so far.

Yeah, Festus-style was what I was thinking, maybe even a nurgling or two rummaging through the bags might be cool.

Thanks Edreynaline, I'm setting aside an evening or two this week for sculpting on that guy and the "mounted" sorcerer too, should come out pretty cool I think.

After a somewhat busy easter weekend, I managed to make some progress with the warriors.

Got the bases finished (apart from grass tufts) and the models pinned to them.
Still to do is the banner, then some last highlights on the metallics. I'll probably go back at a later date and do some extra work sharpening them up, adding some extra shading and such, but they're at a point where I'd be happy to put them on the table for a game, which is an achievement as I seem to have an allergy to finishing units sometimes. Might do a light airbrush of a shadow tone over the bottom of the shields, they're looking a bit flat at the moment.

I thinking of a slightly purplish bruised red for the banner, to compliment the green and also use it as the colour for scraps of cloth on the lord/Blightkings etc.
Not 100% sure yet, would be great to hear thoughts on colour choice for it.

Also got Gutrot built and based, just the stock model, no converting here just a raised cork base.

The blightkings are built and just awaiting sand on their bases.
I'll probably use Gutrot as a champion in the unit for 6 Blightkings total most of the time.

As always, thanks for looking, and time for me to go crack open the Skullreapers

Thanks Waaazag! Got quite a lot of conversions planned, probably too many! Ah well, that's half the fun

__________________

So, I couldn't resist playing with the Skullreapers, and put together this guy:

The more I look at the kit the more I like it, the models seem (to me at least) much less comically-proportioned in the flesh, the actual skullreaper heads are pretty bad though. Look much better using the wrathmonger heads like the one above or the normal ones:

Some of the weapons are silly-big, but they might work on the Skullcrushers where the large mount size might help them look more balanced.
The amount of spare parts of this kit is crazy, there are (I think) 11 different torsos and front armour plates, 2 sets of weapons for the skull reapers and all the wrathmonger equipment.

But don't worry, this plog won't go all blood and skulls, Grandfather Nurgle received some more bodies for the host.

Blightkings!

Again, just like the Skullreapers/Wrathmongers, you get some great spares, the chest/torso pieces especially will be very useful for when I convert up some left-over ogre bodies I have to nurgle ogres .

And finally, as I haven't seen it elsewhere, here's a quick size comparison between the Blightkings, Skullreapers and a warrior.

Hopefully should have some more painting time this week, commuting everyday really sucks up painting time.

Thanks for looking

Cheers Zambro, I took a look at yours, I really like them! Kinda makes me wish I'd converted up some halberds now... ah well, any excuse to buy more hey?

Managed to get some time tonight to sit down and get some more done on the Nurgle lord, wanted to try and practice some TMM as metallics have been a bit of a weak point for me in the past.

Was going for a kind of grimy/oily steel without going for a rusty look. Would be good to hear any thoughts on how it looks?
I did take pictures of each stage so if anyone wants I can put up a mini step-by-step tutorial if that would go down well?

Thanks for taking a look at mine.. I should probably update that blog, seeing as it hasn't had anything worthwhile put in there recently and I've done some work on them this past few weeks...
From a game perspective, halberds are my equipment of choice for Warriors. But I find myself running Chariots over warriors more and more recently. And from a hobbying perspective, can you handle painting another 12-18 warriors? I know I cant (at least, not any time soon)

You nurgle lord looks great! The armour looks solid, and ready for some weathering. Same with the axe head. I'm excited to see exactly what you do with the helm - the white makes it stand out a lot more. When I look at it, the white really grabs my attention. Oh, and the skin / wounds are fantastic!

No worries Zambro, and yes, you really should update the blog, looking forward to it!
And you're most certainly right, the last thing I want to do now is paint any more warriors

_____

After an extremely busy week, finally got some time to sit down and pull out the brushes

The nurgle lord is pretty much finished apart from basing.
Front

Back

Painted the warriors unit standard, might do some freehand when I've practiced a bit more, but happy with it for now.

And the warriors all together. Really pleased with them to be honest. I've officially finished the first unit for the army!

And now for a little preview of other work in progress bits.

Decided to whip up the beginnings of a Chaos Lord/Sorcerer Lord using left over bits from Maggoth lords (Morbidex Twiceborn) and some blightking bits.
He will be standing on a palanquin, so need to sculpt some long robes.

I had the Dark Vengeance helbrute kicking around for months, and was trying to think of something to use it for.
So here's the very beginning of a hellcannon. Using a left over maggoth arm to replace the guns, I'm going to use the vomit/spew bit from the maggoth lords as a nurgly fire/slimeball rising up to his fist from a chasm in the rocky base.
Lots of sculpting to go!

My fluff rationale is that a captured battle wizard was encased in a demon engine by some chaos dwarf daemonsmiths, and the result is a big, angry metal sorceror.
Rather than chaos dwarfs as handlers I was thinking of some kind of acolytes/followers?

And to top it off, I Managed to get the Italian WD limited edition mounted sorceror on ebay for £8. Bargain!.

Thanks for looking, comments and critque always welcome!

Cheers mate! Glad you like them, at first i wasn;t 100% how the purple colour would work with the green, but I'm really happy with it on the banner and the cloth on the lord.
___

After finishing the warriors and lord last night, I couldn't resist getting some paint on the Blightkings.

Here's how the skin looks after a basecoat and some quick airbrush zenithal highlighting. Got a fair amount of washing/glazing and re-highlighting ahead, to get it looking like the lord's skin.

Looking forward to painting all the wounds and creepy bits on these

Little step by step image of the highlighting stages.

Cheers for looking!

Cheers! I'm super pleased with how they are going so far, it's actually keeping me focussed on a single project which is excellent!

After a bit of an absence, I'm back with some progress!

I messed up my first pass at the Blightkings with some careless late night painting. Which meant they had to take a nice bath in some brake fluid, but now I've got them to a point where I'm happy with progress on them.

So here's the pics!

Just got the main flesh tones done and some of the wounds blocked in with some Khorne Red and Balor brown for exposed fat and tissue. Next comes lots of glazing with reds and pruples to get them looking like the chaos lord.

And whilst they were being stripped last week, I decided to lay down some basic colours on this beasty...

The Maggoth lord kit is an absolute must for any Nurgle collector, going to be really fun to paint.
Hopefully the updates should be coming much thicker and faster this week now the blightkings are well on their way.

Cheers for looking!

Bit of an update, I picked up a new modelling lamp this week after the bulb blew in my last one, which put my painting on hold until last night.

Didn't realise it would be so big...

And on the Blightkings, I've got the bruising and wounds on the skin pretty much done, a few sharp highlights then a little gloss to do.
