I played Eldar in 6th Edition, but got out of 40K early last year and sold my army.
I am wondering with all the new rules and Codexes who are the really good armies now?
I don't really want an army that has one dynamite list and the rest of the faction sucks. I'd like to play a faction that has some really strong lists while still being diverse. I also like mobile armies, if at all possible.
Some armies I am interested in include:
Dark Eldar
Grey Knights
Ravenwing
Generic Marines
Space Wolves
Other suggestions?

You can make a variety of interesting/unusual armies out of Eldar allied with Dark Eldar.

I don't really like the looks of Eldar, probably why I ditched them. Kinda looking to go in a different direction.

Minotaurs from Forgeworld! Both use the standard marine dex with other special rules and characters. Rules found below

Edlar in all their forms are still tops on mobility. Diversity-wise, you have three codices of Eldar BB allies, maybe more to come. I haven't seen a SM army yet that is faster or more mobile. I'm not a big personal fan of the aesthetic though. IMO, marines are funner to model and funner to play.

If I go with Marines, who are the most effective Chapters?
Blood Angels?
Basic UltraMarines?
Someone else?

Ultramarines Chapter Tactics are certainly good. White Scars with their tough-ass bikes are really really good and certainly mobile. II hear the Blood Angel and Space Wolves codices are good. I am an Imperial Fist guy, but I don't think they're too popular amongst others. What I'd do if I were you is borrow a copy of the space marine codex, read the chapter tactics, read the forgeworld chapter tactics, and see what grabs you. And try to take a look if the BA or SW codices and see if something grab you even more.
Generally speaking, 7th edition, just like 6ht, is more friendly to shooty armies than CC armies, but you can absolutely make CC armies work if you build em right.

proably vanilla marines. and it's worth noting unlike 5th edition vanilla Marines aren't really "ultramarines and guys just like them" as there are chapter tactics for a varity of chapters that have the potential to change how you'd play them

If you're aiming for mobility Blood Angels, Raven Guard, White Scars, or DA Ravenwing are probably the way to go.

I think I am leaning towards Dark Angels.
I like the bikes and they have a couple of flyers. I wonder if they will get access to the Stormraven in their new Codex.

Dark Angel flyers are gak and should never be taken.
Dark Angels are a Monobuild crapfest anyway.

Peregrine - If you like the army buy it, and don't worry about what one random person on the internet thinks.

Grey Knights look pretty good, do they any diversity?
Are they competitive?

No diversity there are maybe 5 units, including HQs, that are actualy used out of the book. With ally they are ok. Not eldar or necron, but ok to play with.

It seems like Codex Marines are the best option for diversity.
It sadly also sounds like the factions as a whole are poorly designed. Of course all models in a Codex won't be above average, but 75% of your models should be able to turn in solid performances.

Welcome to a GW ruleset. They don't playtest and don't care at all about balance. If you do care about balance, you're playing the game wrong and not forging the narrative hard enough. Welcome to a company that insists snow is black and the customer is always wrong and then wonders where all their customers went.
