You know, at the time I wasn't happy with the government decision to back off. You have enforce the law, even if it means risking violence over something as small as grazing fees.

But having had time for the issue to settle, I'm glad BLM and the various law enforcement groups made the choices they did. First up, no-one got hurt, and that looked like it might have been a real risk. And there was ultimately no real cost to the back down - the grazing fees aren't material and were never the point, the risk was that other people might start to avoid paying fees and taxes through threat of escalation. But they didn't happen, and I suspect the two things are related - if shots had been fired or even someone hit, the issue would have been more politicised, and likely begun to draw in more people with anti-government sympathy. Instead, ending with an anti-climax, in the cold light of day people could see Bundy as a liar/lunatic trying to get out of paying what is due, and the Oathkeepers and others as crazies chasing revolutionary fantasies.

I'm happy to have been wrong, is what I'm saying. Discretion is a hard, but often wise choice.

When he takes his cattle to market they should arrest him while traveling or seize the cattle once sold. That way no one will trade with him.

If you can go to prison for not paying your taxes, why can't they arrest this guy for having $1 million in outstanding fees and fines?

They haven't "Ruby Ridged" this guy yet?

I still think it's sad that s many people can threaten violence and break the law, and nothing happens to them.

That's why the Government should start sending notices of Liens that are placed on his property so have him rant and rave about how he doesn't recognize the US Government while the kids wonder how the Hell they're going to deal with the mayhem afterwards when they cannot inherit the property. Federal seize property can be sold after a year I believe

Does not being a citizen also mean he can be sent to gitmo?

Still pretty unhappy about the precedent that's been set here; that you can refuse to pay your grazing fees and then threaten violence towards the government, and the resolution is you just carry on doing what you're doing for the rest of your life because "who wants the hassle?". I mean, should we also back down on everyone who doesn't pay their taxes and claims they're a sovereign citizen? What's the difference?

For now this nutter gets away with it, but that’s life. It’s nice to think that society will hand out justice to everyone who deserves it all the time, but in the real world government was risking a shoot out with a whole lot of crazies, over what at the end of the day was some uncollected revenue. As well as the potential for immediate deaths, the incident could have sparked future crazies and made the whole situation much worse for decades to come.

So yeah, it means for the time being this crazy gets away with not paying his fees. But with the situation stabilised that can be worked on, and without anyone dying or any escalation of the matter.

Nah, your position is fair. And it is how I felt at the time of back down. The problem presented to law enforcement at the time was a difficult one, neither option was ideal.

Well you're halfway there. When he goes to sell them, confisctae them from anyone that buys them.
No confrontation.
He now has no livelihood.

Why would the US Government foot the bill impounding the cattle, providing feed, medical care, and whatever else that concern cattle's on the tax payers dime. Last time that was tried the US Government violated a court order and look where that lead.

If we start arresting individuals who owe money to the US Government which some are advocating here it seems. Where would we stop?
