And just how did that work out...

They don't call it the Great Crusade for nothing.

Didn't end well though did it.

The Imperium hasn't repeated such a feat. The "greatest Imperial Guard commander in history" got nowhere near close to the accomplishments of the Crusade.

Perhaps not technically a Marine Chapter anymore, but the Flame Falcons would be pretty creepy to fight.

"Boss, we waz out lookin' for grub when some of them Spice Marines showed up and shot all the lads."

"Right. Well, did you at least use the burnas?"

"We tried, but the gits was already on fire."

"...Kunnin'."

The codex is basically The Art of War of the future. It's as valid as that is. The problems start when people adhere to it as if they're rules, not guidelines. It's fine to go against it if the situation requires, which was Guillimans original idea for how it should be used probably. Just chapters like the UM take it too far and treat it like gospel.

They constantly have intense arguements on RAW vs RAI.

The Codex Astartes is self-contradictory because it gives definitive solutions to a great many situations that pop up in wartime. The main problem with it is that combat situations are incredibly fluid and no two are ever alike, making a nonsense out of looking to a particular page for an answer written thousands of years ago, even if it was a primarch who penned it. The other problem is that, if followed to the letter, it makes the devotee/s remarkably predictable and therefore far easier to defeat.

Guilliman would probably turn in his grave, if he had one, if he knew his war 'guide' was being so strictly adhered to .

*sighs* except given this problem hasn't cropped up and codex following chapters have done well (even against opponents Gulliman had never fought) it suggests, just perhaps maybe that you are interpreting the codex wrong.

Honest question, ever read SunTzu's art of war? the reason why I ask is that SunTzu's art of war typically details a general peice of advice, that can be applied no matter the situation. and then details a historical battle in china to illustrate it. I imagine the codex is much the same.

Much of the codex is also no doubt orginizational and possiably even mundane life stuff, but if the codex astartes says "and no Marine should grow his hair beyond 6 inches in length, so as his helmet will fit best" we're proably not gonna hear it unless a future novel features an Ultramarine commenting on the space wolves, and nothing "their grooming standards are not up to the codex astartes" and I'm not exaggerating, I'd be willing to bet the codex DOES cover that type of stuff, because modern military regulations cover that stuff

Best book as on strategy are vague. The Art of war for example is vague, yet its examples are still effective with right application after 2000- 2500 ish years. It requires the reader to make the text work in interpretation.

I have no clue how Dakka's moderation work. I expect it involves throwing a lot of d100 and looking at many random tables.

FudgeDumper - It could be that you are just so uncomfortable with the idea of your chapters primarch having his way with a docile tyranid spore cyst, that you must deny they have any feelings at all.

exactly. I imagine there are some specifics, but it's mostly gonna be examples, stuff like if the enemy out numbers you, always ensure you have a path of escape ready. Such as in the battle of Bobtown, we where out numbered a hundred to one, so I moved and grounded thudner hawks close to the battlelines, when we inflicted what damage we could, we where able to pull out in an orginzied fashion before the enemy forces where able to orginize and attack us"
