When I paint my Necrons I plan on changing the green rod to a brighter blue. Since I will be painting on them do I just prime the rod while its glued to the gun, or paint it separately and then glue it on? Just curious.

Its your choice. Both sound equally easy although personally I'd be inclined to glue them in then prime them.

Personally I'd paint it seperately, since that lets you do all your messy drybrushing real fast and then just slpat the rod in when you are done.

Well if there is no drybrushing then that's a moot point.

Good luck holding it while you are trying to paint it

Drill a little hole in one of the ends that will be attached to the gun (so you wont see the hole once its attached). Stick a bit of wire up there while you paint it...problem solved!

You could try using lego light sabers if you don't want to paint them

I primed and painted mine on the model:
(work in progress picture)
That said, consider getting these: http://amzn.com/B0006O6QNU. They're exactly the same radius as the stock green ones, I got a bunch of red ones for my Necrons. You need to cut them to length but you get a total of 72" worth of rods per pack.

I hadn't planned on changing my rods, but recently I have been considering it, I just don't know whether I like them, they seem too plastic. the painted ones above look really good.
Anyone had any experience airbrushing them? I was thinking of using the ghost tints? as they are transparent

I primed my warriors black with the rod in, and then criss-crossed white lines along the primed rod. Then i washed the whole rod with Nihilakh Oxide, added a few more dots, and did one more quick layer of the oxide.
This is what it looks like:

I audibly went "wooooah..." when I saw that. Really great.
That also leads to my recommendation. If you prime and paint it on the model it'll be easier to do OSL like he did. If you're not going to bother with it, it may be convenient to paint if off or just buy translucent blue rods.
