If you're referring to the minatures, you should still buy them. Space marines are space marines. As far as the codex goes, that's your call. It's rumored to come out late summer. If you're willing to wait that long to get a game in. Sourcing one used would be my recommendation, that way you can jump in feet first and by the time the next codex drops you'll be hitting the ground running.

New codex or not.
Marines are always Marines.
You can buy stuff independent of a new codex.

I think both are not very likely with the codex having a higher probability than the rule book.
Generally, an edition last for four years. An exception was the sixth edition.

Get a softcover mini rulebook instead of the big set. Ask around at your local gaming store/club, and you'll probably score one for cheap. I doubt 7e is going anywhere, any time soon. At least 1 more year, and you'll see at least 7e Eldar and Space Marine before an edition jump.

I also heard they would be releasing an updated codex late summer. I think I'd buy mini's and just wait on the dex personally but that's just me. Plenty to paint while I wait.
From what I understand the codex (if updated) will really mostly be minor rules tweaks mainly though so units you collect now will still be useful. There's one rumor over on BOLS right now saying they may release or update something to do with Assault Marines which would be welcome, but I'm not holding my breath on it or anything.
So collect some of what you like! You can always play games with the basic units for fun while you wait to see if there are any mind boggling changes on the more elite ones in the pipe.

Hopefully this edition is around for longer than a year! Unless they want to release an assaulty edition

Space marines get a brand new codex within 2 years of the last one. and almost every single new edition their has been a new codex for marines. on the other hand my poor orks tend to go 6+ years between codex releases.
2014 Current Codex released
2008 Last codex
1999 previous codex
Maybe GW should dedicate some more staff to writing codex so that they either release them with every new edition or they balance it out a bit.

Space Marines get a new codex every edition. So, sooner or later, there will be a new book (7th hasn't had a SM codex yet).
That being said, unlike every other army in the game, SMs do not have units removed from the codex. I'll repeat that, because it is imortant: Space Marines do not have units dropped from the codex (Tyrannic War veterans don't count, they are Ultramarines exclusive, not a generic Space Marines unit).
Now, individual characters may get dropped (and it's a safe bet that anybody currently in resin will get axed... oh wait... that's everyone who isn't an Ultramarine? Uh-oh) but actual units never get cut. Every unit listed in the codex has a model. Every unit.
So that means that you can buy whatever models you want, and every model you buy will still be usuable with the new codex. As a SM player for 20 years, I guarantee this with absolute confidence.
Now, some of your units may not be as effective once the new rules come out, but they will still all be 100% useable.
So feel free to buy a used copy of the SM codex and use it till the new one comes out (late summer or whenever). But don't worry about the models; whatever you buy will still be in the army when the new codex comes out.

Really? All mine are metal.
On a more serious note, I'm not sure what GW will do with the SM character roster. Everybody has a model, so they won't drop them for that reason. But every other codex had a culling of the character roster, so Codex SM will be no different. If I had to guess I'd say that any character whose big schtick was altering the FOC will get axed and have their special ability dropped onto the random roll chart your general uses (ala Imperial Guard).

The resin models are just recasts of the old metal ones, because they had to make everything in resin. I hated that.

Honestly, I think they're going to keep the current character roster, it wouldn't make sense to drop them right now. Don't see anything really new being added sadly.

As for the rule book, I think your safe in buying one now.
I talked to the manager of a games workshop store on last Saturday and he said a supplement is much more likely - not a complete redo of what most consider to be a great codex all around. He also said that the space marine tactical squad is one of the best selling boxes in their inventory and they have a 2-3 year supply of them in the workshops - really unlikely the redo the tac box.
