Nah the film did good business despite being critically panned and loathed by fans.

It made almost 400 million on a 130 million dollar budget.

It's profit was well below what the studio expected, but technically not a bomb.

Did you ever hear the story about when Emmerich's crew took the Zilla model to Toho? The Japanese just stood there silent as the minutes passed, making things more and more awkward. Finally, someone said the Americans should come back the next day to give them some time to think about it. The next day, the Japanese gave the Americans some technical praise. Later, Toho studio people confessed they were not only stunned by the unveiling but could not even think of anything complimentary to say as they continued staring at it. So they just stood there staring.

It's kind of like that scene in the Star Wars DVD special features that shows the LFL production team watching the first screening of Phantom Menace at Skywalker Ranch. Except they made the movie that stunned them into silence.
