It is tiny, when you look at the financial scale of this event. But at the same time it's actually kind of huge, when you look at the tiny pool of professional fighters in the world, compared to other sports. Boxing is weird.

At least that fight went down in history, and the 91 seconds it went for was pretty exciting. I've seen lots of sport go the distance, and maybe even have a close finish, while being boring throughout because of the way the game was played.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.

Also, I would consider the number of people who pay that kind of money and actually watch the undercard... I've seen many events have 5-10 fights, most in different weight classes... I wouldn't be surprised if there is an undercard here as well
Mayweather is playing a dangerous game imo with all the guff, bravado and talk of the greatest ever. If he loses this fight his legend is well and truely over albeit a very good record overall.
He should just shut his mouth and play it all down. Then, if he wins he can start bragging etc.
Plus hes made zero friends with his attitude /rollseyes

I'm hoping for a Pacquiao win personally. For one thing i like watching him fight more than Mayweather, and for another, he seems like a decent human being, quite unlike Mayweather.
Fascinating reading. Just watched a documentary on him narrated by the saintlike Liam Neeson. To be fair it did touch on his wonanising and alcoholism and gambling addiction but no mention of his anti abortion, contraception views etc.
However despite a detracting minority hes still held pretty much as a Godlike figure in the Philippines.

cincydooley wrote: Anyone have any reading on why Mayweather gets so much more money from the fight than Pac-Man?
Because he's undefeated and his contract is on the Mayweather hype train? I don't actually know. This is the second boxing card I've ever watched, the first being Tyson/Holyfield (you know the one).
Watching the undercard fights atm. If every fighter was as quick and punchy as this Lomachenko guy is, I could see watching a few more fights.

Mayweather gets in trouble, Mayweather holds...over and over again (some low shots in there too); no call or warning. Apparently branding is more important than calling a fair fight.
Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.
I bet Mayweather retires after this. There's really no other opponent active right now that's better than Pacquiao, so there's really nothing Mayweather has left to accomplish.

Except rake in more money with opponents that get the hype treatment. Seriously, though, it would be good to see him retire at the top of his game with the money to live well, and not take it too far to the point of getting permanent brain damage.
I honestly think there should be a rule in place where fighters have a limited number of fights or injuries they can have before they are forced to retire. I look at Ali and think about how not getting out soon enough crippled him.

Hasn't this always been his tactic and how he won a lot of his fights?
Mayweather has excellent defensive game and this is exactly how he won.
It just makes for terribly boring entertainment.

The hugging stuff is utter bullcrap. Everytime an opponent goes for a hug, he should lose 1 point, period. If someone needs to rest, he should surrender and go on vacation instead of wasting the time of millions of spectators.
They already beat each other with pillows on their hands. We don't need additional cuddling.

You do realise that boxers wear gloves not to reduce the amount of damage inflicted on the opponent's face, but to stop you from breaking your own knuckles within the first two punches.

Not to mention that 90% of MMA fights involve a ton of ground game, where one opponent sits on top of the other and tries to wrestle him. Now who's cuddling?
