I have been using an unamed listbuilder I have completed a two thousand point army and it checks out ruleswise according to the program. But fielding legion of the damned as Detachment It seems I can field a dreadnought and three legion squads. Any more elites i do get rules error. Also thunderfire cannon is 100 points. But was told it "Is fielded with a techmarine ". Do I add for points or does it just have one. Thanks for reading and helping if you reply. Sorry for touchscreen typing.

You would need to check with the LotD supplement for that. as for the TFC its in C:SM the unit compsoition should make that answer obvious

With the LoTD, it would depend on how it was I putted into the list builder - you can either take them as ordinary Elite choices in a C: SM army, or as a separate detachment from their Dataslate. If taking them from the 'Slate, there's nothing stopping you from having a second LoTD detachment for three more units if you wanted to.
The TFC comes with a Techy "built in", you don't have to buy one separately.

No problem. Page 175 of the codex explains it.

What kind of detachment are you trying to field? It sounds like you are trying to use the Legion of the damned detachment but are filling it with codex: space marine units. This detachment has 1-4 elite slots and that is it. So if you fill 1 with a dreadnought and the other 3 with legion squads you will get errors whenever you try and add anything else. Bigger problem however is that you are using codex: space marine units. Your 'unamed' army builder program likely did not inform you that you can not use codex: space marines with this detachment. You can only use codex: legion of the damned. Codex legion of the damned does not have any dreadnought in it.

Do you own Codex: Space Marines and Codex: Legion of the Damned? The answers to your questions are very clearly stated if you read those books. If you don't own them, please be aware that we are not a replacement for owning rule books.

Only Legion codex. I know you are not a replacement. Not a rich guy so could only drop for one codex that left more questions for a new player than solid answers. Just trying not to waste money on models I do not need or cannot field. But the wording for the elites question was wierd so I asked you guys. And the stupid Thunderfire question was also due to not purchasing as of yet. The whole shebang with paint tools and models and books is more than a months pay and I am responsible and married. Or are you recommending a free download from one of the ultra reputable websites that GW supports?

Alright, well if you own the Legion of the Damned codex, you should be able to see exactly what is available for you. Whatever little program you are using is meant to be a reference. To put it very simply, if it's not in the codex, you can't use it. Doesn't matter what your program says.
For the error message you're getting, look at the Detachment options. Can't get more clear than 'Black is what you HAVE to take, gray is what you can optionally add to it.' And again, you have to use the units given in the book.

Of course I'm not recommending piracy.
The Legion of the Damned Codex has access to precisely one unit... Legion of the Damned.
It sounds like you really want to play a Space Marine army. You need to save up and buy the Space Marine Codex. Fair warning though... there will probably be a new one before summer. Save up now and buy it when it's released.

Yes that was sarcasm. We fear GW over everything. I am new. I have to buy both to field both. Bought the cheaper one first and yeah... I am really trying to field both. Thank you for the advice.

Whenever you play both, you'll just need to make a separate detachment from C:SM and fill out the relevant FoC. You'll have to take a character and some tac squads to get at the Dreadnought.
