My friends and I are wanting to get sort of Fantasy Battles campaign going. We will have battles trying to take control of provinces on a map we've made up.

What we also want to do, though, is each have a designated hero that we can field or not field with are armies as we please. This hero will be able to be fielded with our armies freely, not taking up any point allotment.

We want to allow these heroes to level up, somewhat. Gain abilities, more wounds, higher strength or toughness and the like as they gain experience on the battlefield. But we aren't entirely sure how to put this into practice. Has anyone else done something similar to this? Or have any suggestions on how we could do this? I really want to put this element into our games, as I think it will be very fun to have our own personal named Generals going toe to toe in combat. But I'm very quite lost on how to actually get a level system, or maybe some sort of roll table put into play. Any help anyone can give would be appreciated. Thanks to all in advance!

If you can find a copy of the General's Compendium from 6th edition, do so. IIRC, there's a system for that in there(I'll check my copy tomorrow to be sure).

Thanks much! I'll take a look into it

Is, by any chance, one of you a Warrior of Chaos player? You could give some of those "Gifts of Chaos" (not sure how they're called atm) or, this goes for every army, let your generals start out with nothing but standard gear, and let them receive new magic items as the campaign progresses.

The General's Compendium as mentioned above sounds excellent.

This sounds like an awesome idea, I am in heavy support of it! WHFRPG can give you some really awesome characters, they could make for interesting generals for your army

IIRC It's the Eye of the Gods chart

Shadowrun is the best game ever. It's the only thing I have ever played in which I have jumped out of a shot out van with a chainsaw to cut a flying drone in half before leveling a building with ANFO assisted by a troll, a dwarf, an elf, and a wizard.

Yeah, but there used to be upgrades you could give your characters, too, without needing a roll..

White Dwarf #350, from March, 2009 (one of the only 2 WD issues I've ever bought) has some rules for character advancement. If you can't find a copy online, I can try to post the pages tomorrow.

Edit: that's the US WD, not UK.

Thanks for the other ideas! One of us will probably be playing Chaos, so we intended on letting them gain for the Chaos Gifts chart.

And I'll see if I can't find a copy of that White Dwarf issue, thanks!

I think Mordheim has a system for character development...
And it's compatable with WHFB.

How about starting with naked characters, at small points level battles and have the earn, steal or be be gifted armour, weapons, magical things and increased stats...

I have heard of people trying to allow interesting things for different factions during a campaign. For instance skaven can use tunnels and assassins. I think undead had the ability to be raised between battles or went through less fatigue issues (though i imagine keeping them around is straining for the necromancer/vampire controlling them).

I rather like the idea of home brewed characters. I always wanted to try my own skaven character like a skaven that plays a flute and lures children with it away from the villages (complete opposite of the dude that led rats away), skaven robin hood or the skaven with the triforce of cowardice (ganon would be a doombull or minotaur).

I will say i am interested.

I've also gotten into mordheim with the computer game version that came out (featuring skaven, empire mercenaries, sisters of sigmar and the cult of the possessed). I'm waiting till it's fully released before playing it again though.

What I'm planning on doing with my sons is starting with a Mordheim campaign, then moving into skirmish, then full WFB battles/campaign as we paint more models. So I guess we will use the Mordheim character advancement, and you can find the full Mordheim rulebook all nice and legal at http://gaming.yaktribe.org/

I'd still be interested in this though. Any chance you could post these pages up?

Sure, here they are:

You can zoom in on them in the gallery, if you can't make out the text here. It might be wise to download this now in case it gets taken down for copyright reasons.

Cool thanks.

That's actually almost identical to the Mordheim character advancement rules. Just slightly slimmed down with fewer skills to choose from and the ability to add free magic weapons.

Interesting. Glad I could help.
