Is this survey for land forces only?

To be picky, some of the more ancient Ancient armies are pre-Bronze age.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I didn't include my Wings of Glory and Sails of Glory stuff because ... well, less because I reckoned the poll was land-based only and more because those games don't feel like "historicals" for whatever reason.

Why don't those games feel like historicals to you Manchu?

It can be land-only if you want it to be

I've never heard of prehistoric wargaming, so the stone age has been included in "other".

Baseless prejudice, honestly, from which I didn't realize I suffered until responding to KK. It probably has something to do with the board game-style production values.

There are some AWESOME Naval and Aerial games, though.

One of the very first miniature games I ever saw was WWII Naval, and Napoleonic Naval (followed closely by Civil War naval).

And one of my favorite games was a WWI Aerial Game where we eventually got miniatures (Blue Max).

Honestly, I think the WW1 Wings of Glory is a pretty flawless air combat game. It is as simple or as complex as you want it to be.

WW2 is pretty good as well, but needs tweaks.

In the late-1970's and early-1980's, we used to play an Air-Combat game called Advanced Fighter Combat by Lou Zocchi.

Lou, when he would run the game at conventions, was the first person to use 1/72 scale model airplanes, mounted on sticks (like the military used in WWII to teach air combat), and then the sticks coming out of the back of the aircraft would be mounted on altitude sticks with clothes-pins.

You got a real sense of dogfighting with that game (It had a simultaneous movement system that allowed you to "tail" an enemy aircraft).

I have not seen the WWII version of Wings of Glory.

I will need to look for it.

In the meantime... Back to Middle-earth.
