Alright, branding myself a n00b right from the start here, but here goes:
I've seen some awesome terrain and modeling threads that use this nifty foam stuff. It's thick, seems to cut well, shape well, and just looks overall great. Here's a pic from Gralon's awesome-sauce trench board thread, so you know what I'm talking about.
What is this stuff and where I can find some in the US?

Any construction or home improvement store should have some. Home Depot, Lowes, etc...
Some Hardware stores may have it too.

You can get it at lowes and home depot.
However, depending on the part of the country you live in, you may only find it in thinner sheets (in Texas for example, they only carry it in 1" thick).
There are hundreds of videos on youtube on terrain and working with this stuff - so do some searches and check them out - while it is easy to work - there are a few tricks to it.
best of luck.

One brand is Knauf, the product is called Spaceboard.
Sound fairly German to me so it may be very easy for you to find?

My bad on the suggestion regarding where to get - totally misread the location...

The material is called Extruded PolyStyren or XPS for short (Not to confused with Expanded PolyStyren EPS which is the regular packing material with bubbles)
As people have mentioned it is commonly available as building insulation. Where to get it in Germany I do not know, but with the description above it should be easier to find it.
