So, I've been brainstorming a fluffy Word Bearers list around the idea that they are still one of the last traitor legions that still function as a legion and so would characteristically have power- armored bodies en masse. How does one take CSM in this manner without loosing every game? I'm thinking unmarked 20-man squads footslogging across with support from oblits and psychic buffs. maybe termicide units in reserve to take out key targets.

I went to Hershey Park in central PA this year, and I have to say I was more than a little disappointed. I fully expected the entire theme park to be make entirely of chocolate, but no. Here in America, we have "building codes," and some other nonsense about chocolate melting if don't store it someplace kept below room temperature. |

Be sure to bring an aegis defense line in case there's not much cover, or it's not where you wish it was.
Actually, consider one of the fortification networks that allow you to bring multiple sets of fortifications. Even if you don't get in them, having the option to bunker up in AV14 buildings if you see a lot of plasma cannons or battle cannons across from you would be useful. It also allows you to set traps for some units, leaving space for them to land and go after your buildings so you can come from reserves and counterattack etc. (20 marines rapid-firing bolters can do some damage!)

Take Huron or Ahriman for master of deception- you're going to need the infiltrate in order to get your blobs to grips with the enemy. Huron used to be the de facto SC to take for CSM due to his low cost, but with the advent of 7th edition and invisibility, Ahriman having a 67% chance of rolling on invisibility in addition to having master of deception and the ability to spam psychic shrieks makes him pretty viable. Brainstorming a list real quick: Ahriman 20xChaos Space Marines (Powerfist) 20xChaos Space Marines (Powerfist, Icon of Vengeance) 2xChaos Spawn 2xChaos Spawn Heldrake (Baleflamer) Maulerfiend 2xObliterators 2xObliterators Comes out to almost exactly 1500 points.

I like Fabius for this kind of thing, makes one blob S5 fearless, then can join another to make that fearless.

Fabius is great. Nothing like making a 20-man CSM blob strength 5, then giving them the Icon of Wrath so that they're wounding MEQ on 2's.

For word bearers I think it might be worth considering 30k word bearers. Of all the legions, these are the most suited to being used as csm with the legion rules. And 30k does blobs pretty well. And they're currently the most psychic too, and have rules to buff one blob similar to fabius but for multiple squads. You're also battle bros with daemons. Kind of kills the fluff word bearers idea if you throw in either of these guys.

Refer to my quote on that one. I'm still waiting for 30k to catch on in my neck of the woods Automatically Appended Next Post: HawaiiMatt wrote:

I'm not opposed to proxying some word- bearers esque guy with a similar loadout as Huron and I'll be building a sorcerer for this army anyways

Look into Cypher as a good Character that does have Infiltrate, but can also outflank and give Shrouded and Hit and Run, with good reliable plasma shooting and a high Initiative.
I've been toying with a big Cypher party crasher blob of Plague Marines, or Zombies.

I've been thinking about a list with power armoured horde using the purge:
The Purge have 2 HQ (1 Compulsory), 6 elites (2 compulsory), 6 troops, 4 HS, 1 LoW, 1 Fort and no FA. All flamers have shred.
HQ
Chaos lord (in blob, needed for fearless)
Powerfist, lightening claw
Elites
7 chosen with 5 flamers
Rhino
7 chosen with 5 flamers
Rhino
Troops
18 CSM with 2 flamers, ccws and bps (In bunker for catapult deployment)
Has champ with power axe/sword/maul and melta bombs
Heavy support
7 Havocs
4 melta
Rhino
7 Havocs
4 melta
Rhino
7 Havocs
4 melta
Rhino
7 Havocs
4 plasma
Rhino
Fotification
Bunker with escape hatch
Renegades (also Purge)
HQ
Arch demagougue
4 disciples with autocannon
Elites
3 spawn
3 spawn
3 spawn
3 spawn
HS
3 rapier laser destroyers with militia training.
1850pts
In lists like this blobs are assisted with either escape hatch deployments or infiltrate. These are essential to reduce the otherwise inevitable 3 turn footslog.
The problem with CSM squads is that they are just not killy enough, however Havocs are basically CSM squads which can have 4 specs and a combi, with The Purge you can take 4 squads of these as actual decent CSMs, without the need of a 100pt cultist tax + HQ. So you can run PA horde which actually has a good damage output If you take The Purge.

I like the list, but 60 guys doesn't really seem horde-ish to me.
I mean, my grey knights wall of silver has more bodies than that.

Good point. I'd been thinking of number of squads and not number of models when I made that, should have added up the bodies. It is very difficult to make a horde list with such expensive squads.
Huron to infiltrate d3. 2 CAD to take 2 escape hatch bunkers and you could run 4 20 man blobs. But then again - it's only slightly more than 61 bodies. If Huron or Ahriman guarenteed 3 like Issodon it would be easier.
I'll rethink.

What about that fortification that lets you take multiple bunkers and defense lines?
3 bunkers + defense line + defense emplacement is 360 points.
It would let you sling shot 60 marines forward.
Take 3x10 cultists to man the battlements (and move into the bunker asap, once the chaos marines jump out).
Add in some havocs for heavy support in the trenches.
It's not a ton of guys, but it does project upfield pretty quickly.

Yeh i experimented with that in list building but 240pts for 3 escape hatch bunkers and 120pts for trenches is far too much if you're also wanting to horde it up with 13ppm minimum.
That's almost a 1/5 of your army in a 1850pt list just sitting there as pretty useless buildings once the marines have been catapulted forward.
I mean once you've filled them with 20man units to get the points worth out of them (not inc hqs) and if the only upgrade you take is a fist for the champ, all you will have done is spent over 67% of your points to move 60 basic CSMs 18 + d6" forward rather than 6 + d6" forward. For 45pts cheaper you could just take 6 10 man units in rhinos with a pf on every squad. Gets you 3 more pfs, and 6 rhinos, which are, whilst no where near as durable as bunkers, a lot more useful in most situations.
