So I know Pask is a must-have for an IG army, but I was wondering how people would view a proxy. Having to go through GW mail order is a pain, and that's the only way to get Pask currently. I may get him in the future (when I need enough other stuff to meet the minimum for free shipping) but in the mean time who would mind if I used the tank commander who comes in the Leman Russ kit?

Simply get any tank commander/tank markings and say its pask. I wouldn't even bother buying Pask ever to be honest.

I would also avoid buying at GW, better to find places that sell GW stuff cheaper if you can.

I usually do. Even if I pay regular retail or close to, I prefer to do so supporting a local gaming shop. Webstore exclusive stuff is trickier though.

Me either. For a while I had a metal pin (more like a tooth pick really) with a tiny flag on it. Which ever tank had pask had the flag.

as long as people know which tank has pask there should be no issue.

Forking over monies to GW for their exclusive tank commander sculpts is a bit asinine, IMO. You're basically getting a bust - not even a whole model.

If you like it and think your tank needs it, go for it. But personally I think the vanilla tank commanders you get are more than adequate, as long as your other tanks have closed hatches (otherwise you'd need some other unique paint scheme or something to make that one particular tank commander stick out).

Done so for my Hammerhead Longstrike, as well as my Leman Russ Pask.

Yeah he's a guy standing in the cupola. You add him to a Leman Russ

For mine, I took the second flag from the ccs kit and put it on a LR. Bigger and more obvious than the real thing and why would the genius tank commander be sitting out in the open in the middle of a battle?

My Pask is the one staying in the damn tank. Jimmy The Battlecannon In Front, though, he's got a heroid looking tank commander.

For the record:

1) Pask is cut off at the knees. He's not a bust

2) he also comes with a cupola meaning he's the same amount of material

3) he is actually cheaper than most solos. I just looked at one in my flgs before I decided he didn't go with my Vostroyans and he was 10$ in metal as opposed to the usual 15$.

The dude goes on a Leman Russ, like, in the turret cupola, because you can put him in any variant. It's the same as the Tau tank commander (Longstrike http://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Tau-Empire-Longstrike) and the Ultramarine one (although he does come on foot as well, for when the tank goes *pop* http://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Space-Marine-Sergeant-Chronus).

I think we can stop worrying about unrealistic. Maybe they prayed to the machine spirits of their radio wrong, and now they need to signal visually tank to tank? Or their auspex is blocked by psyker trickery, and they need to lay the guns by eye.

This is 40k, there are a million bones to pick with realism before this ha

I managed to get a metal Pask for cheap(er than GW, payed less than half price, it's still ridiculous for a small bust), but just convert one for yourself.

You get some guys that can sit in LR hatches for virtually any vehicle (old kits came with the vehicle sprue (with like dozer blade on it), that contained multiples of these), you take one, and call it Pask.

Or as others have said, point to your Punisher, and say Pask is sitting there.

You don't need the Pask miniature. Just say he is being smart and not sticking his head out of the hatch in middle of battle. Do make sure his tank is different from the other tanks in your army though. He needs to be recognisable.
Personally I use a FW tank commander to represent him.

I don't have a Pask Leman Russ, but if I did I'd probably just buy the actual Pask model as I don't think it's a bad looking model. Alternatively I might grab the FW Commissar and use it as Pask because that looks pretty cool too.

Of course, you don't have to, just have some sort of identifying features and it's fine.

The Pask I'm planning on running is just the legs from the tank accessory sprue coupled with one of the torsos from Cadian Command Squad(which gives you 3 torsos that are for the officer).

I don't see what's so wrong with having a big giant flag on one of the tanks.

1) it's a bit that has no use, you get two flags in the kit and only need one

2) it's realistic for my red army themed force of Space Russians, often they'd put banners and flags on their tanks to make it easier to know who to follow

3) it makes more sense than a guy who is quite possibly the most important guy in your army sticking his fool head out of his tank.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Gathering the Informations.

For me, personally, it's easier to set it up as a model I can have "popping out" of the turret overall.

When built as a full model with the older Russ turret(which is what I have), you can basically just pop him up through the bottom of the Russ turret ring.

It seems to me to be trying to replicate the iconic images you see of WW2 tanks rolling toward the front with their commanders sitting up out of the hatches, not while actually in battle.

Though even in battle I think it was quite common for the better tank commanders to have their hatches open, occasionally popping up just enough to survey the battlefield (though of course they wouldn't be standing with their whole head and torso exposed).

If you like the model then just buy it, it's hardly bank breaking. It's not overly realistic to have your commander with his head constantly out the tank but I also don't think it's entirely unreasonable for them to pop out briefly every now and then; plus it's 40k so it's not exactly a paragon of realism. And it's just something to identify the model with.
