!Warning - do not post Game of Thrones spoilers on this thread!

So basically LOTR was my first game back in the day and I absolutely love it, though I recently realised that I had simply become bored with my Wood Elf army. Whether it was tactics, painting or whatever I didn't know. But I needed a change. I love Game of Thrones (or GoT for short) and the two seem to go hand in hand in terms of fantasy and so why not on the tabletop. My loyalty is, and will always be, with the Stark family, and so I have decided that I want to create a Northern Stark LOTR army. I figured the best army to use as bog standard troops would be Rohan, and that's where I'll start. This project gives great scope for conversion, and that particularly excites me as it rarely happens in LOTR. I have also had the idea of using black Rangers of Gondor as the Night's Watch, of which I want a small contingent. I have already created a model for Ned Stark.

So this wasn't actually too tricky a conversion. I did a simple head swap for a finecast Boromir head (Sean Bean!!) and turned around the sword Elendil holds, filling any gaps with green stuff. Then I put a strip of green stuff on the top of the cloak and pricked it with a pin repeatedly to create the fur effect (multiple tutorials are on youtube). I built on this twice to give height to the fur, and this hid any problematic areas left over from the head swap, which was useful. What do you think? I enjoy any feedback and will keep you up to date. Up soon ... Robb Stark, Jon Snow and Catelyn Stark.

Here you go:

The easiest way to get pics from your gallery to a blog is to copy and paste the entirety of the URL in the 'forums' box (lower right of the gallery page). This copies the image and links it, so viewers can click it and be taken straight to the larger pic if they wish.

As for the conversion, it's nicely done indeed! I'm not a GoT-follower, but as a mini that is very cool!

as great as that looks
, id reccomend not going the GW route, and the standard model, id reccomend making some conversion parts, and casting them, because the stark armour is padded leather, in a diagonal pattern, there arent any models like that, except that one guy in that one brettonian box,

so, id suggest either painting on the leather armour pattern, or sculpting it, in which case, 1/3rd of the rohan soilders with the flat leather armour will work, with a bit of green stuff fur

and mabye look into the perry minitures ranges, the war of the roses, and british army boxes, great value, and more accurate models,

either way, good luck!

To be honest the point of this is to use LOTR models so that I can play the LOTR game so thanks for the ideas I may do the diagonal patterned armour on characters but I think that would probably be it. The warriors are close enough as they are and would do for the army I am planning. Thanks anyway, any feedback is appreciated and I don't mean to sound dismissive.

Hi guys quick update!
I have an idea for a conversion of Catelyn Stark, based on an Eowyn model I have. I have converted the sword she owns into a dagger, but I am not sure how convinced I am by it (see below).

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for what Catelyn could be holding? Bearing in mind that it is some kind of two handed object etc. Thanks again for any feedback!

Calling all bannermen! New Update!

So I haven't posted for a while, but I've been up to quite a lot all in all. As promised I have made my Robb Stark model (see far below), which is based on the Aragorn at Amon Hen model that I bought cheaply on eBay. I started this model and knew I needed a head swap to create Robb's short (ish!) curly hair, replacing Aragorn's shoulder length locks - hence the severed head of Aragorn below. I then found an old model of Dalamir lying about and thought his bald head could be useful if I could green stuff hair onto it - I couldn't find any other suitable heads. The only ones close would have been Hobbits', but their size on a fully grown man would have looked awkward.

I then decapitated Dalamir simply with a hobby knife. The head was quite open on the model so it wasn't difficult to get a clean cut - nothing was in the way.

I glued Dalamir's head onto Aragorn's body and it was as simply as that really.

To make the model its own, I green stuffed Robb's hair by placing a blob onto the top of his crown, shaping it generally where I wanted it to go. To get the impression of some waviness and texture, I took pin, watered its point and pricked the green stuff until I was happy with the overall look. This may seem vague but it is really much easier than it sounds and the finished product lets off - I would recommend it to anyone! I then greenstuffed the armour, shaping it as best as I could, and then layered liquid green stuff over the top of it to smooth it out. I also applied some liquid green stuff to the face for extra texture that I can paint up as stubble. I decided against a cloak for Robb as I tried it out and wasn't happy with my own technical work, and I think the skinniness of the model meant a large waving cloak looked out of place. Also, post-battle scenes of GoT depict Robb cloak-less, and so I have assumed that is how he fights in battle. Here he is:

As well as Robb, I have been trying out some of my other ideas recently too. I want a contingent of the Night's Watch in my army, and on google images I saw a conversion of a mounted ranger of Gondor. This inspired me to make my own mounted brother of the Watch by chopping both a rider of Rohan and a Gondor ranger at the legs, and glueing together the ranger torso to the rider's legs. I had to fill the gaps with green stuff, as well as blend the cloaks of each model together. I bought some silicone modelling brushes recently and they are so useful for that sort of modelling - without them I wouldn't be half as happy with the finished model. Note the shard of dragonglass in the model's left hand, as a further pointer to the series.

Furthermore, I know the title states Stark/Winterfell themed Lord of the Rings Rohan army, but I have painted my first warrior - based on an archer of Minas Tirith. Do not fret, I have not given up on the horse lords of Rohan, rather I am planning on having some slightly heavier armoured guys to lead the Rohan, think of an SM sergeant leading a tactical squad. I removed the tree iconography on the breast plate and rounded the helmet slightly, removing a little ridging from the area over the cheeks, and slit down the leg plating with the hobby knife, to create the northern leather armour effect. What do you think of the outcome?

Finally (sorry to have bored you thus far - there seems a lot to catch up on!) I have begun making my mould that I will be able to make Stark sigils from for my shields and banners. I cut out the wolf's head from the axe that features in the new Space Wolves upgrade kit GW have released, and so hopefully soon I shall be able to begin updating my warriors and give them that little extra that I think will make a big difference.

Thanks for reading (as always!) and I welcome any feedback at all, everything is helpful!

N.B. - Any further thoughts on what Catelyn could be holding (see my last post) would also be greately appreciated. Thanks again!
