Purely based on playstyle here, I've never used Saladin but do own him. I don't see him as the default Lt by a long shot. He's good, but he's also pricey for someone that's not very good in combat for the points you pay once the shooting starts. You really need to build a list to utilise him.

It's not that he's an obvious Lieutenant, but he's an
aggressive Lieutenant. However, the fact that he's not Extremely Impetuous makes him a lot easier to control and let you pick his fights, unlike Kum who tend to have their fights picked by a smart opponent.
CoC isn't necessary, but it's a nice safety net if you feel you need it. And even then, if you don't make him your Lt (and thus he stays Irregular) it's a good fake-out for your opponent to hunt someone he thinks is your Lt.

MSV-types)
If you're bringing 3 bikers, you've got
plenty of smoke. Any more and you'll risk hampering your own shooting.

I wouldn't go heavy on template weapons unless you know the table is going to be cramped. Which then makes Kum very hard to use because of the bigger base size. Naffatun, however, are good, cheap Regular units to include in a Kum combat group for some extra Regular orders. They really benefit for having a few Regular orders lying around to exploit their faster movement.
