Subject: Reality trumps The Onion, or Social Media, ISIS, and an three Joint Direct Attack Munitions
I haven't started a thread in a while so I thought I'd pick up with a rather nice story about a harry tool who thought taking a selfie would be a great idea.
Unfortunately for him, that harry tool is was a member of ISIS and was standing in front of a "headquarters" building, whatever that means. Laugh or cheer, the details are in the story below.
Yoni Heisler, BGR News wrote:‘Moron’ terrorist takes a selfie in front of ISIS headquarters, Air Force bombs it 22 hours later
Apparently, looks can kill. In a very real story that we assure you did not originate from The Onion, a terrorist from ISIS recently took a selfie of himself and posted it online.
Shortly thereafter, U.S. Intelligence, which heavily monitors social media accounts from ISIS members and supporters, managed to pinpoint an ISIS headquarters building in Syria by using the selfie photo as a reference point.
According to Air Force General Hawk Carlisle (which is a perfect name for an Air Force General we must say), airmen from Hurlburt Field, Florida in the 361st Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group were the first to pick up on the photo.
“The guys that were working down out of Hurlburt, they’re combing through social media and they see some moron standing at this command,”Carlisle said in an interview with Defense Tech. “And in some social media, open forum, bragging about the command and control capabilities for Daesh, ISIL. And these guys go: ‘We got an in.’ So they do some work, long story short, about 22 hours later through that very building, three [Joint Direct Attack Munitions] take that entire building out.”

One of the benefits of Terrorists adopting social media.
The only way it could have been better would have been if the pilot had tweeted what was about to happen seconds before it did to the guy who originally tweeted.

That would have been epic
Especially if it included an aerial pic of the target building.

This reminds me of an incident in Afghanistan around 2011.
I remember in Afghanistan a unit in my AO was on a joint patrol with some ANA guys; As the patrol was going down a road they found an abandoned car on the side of the road, this just doesn't happen in Afghanistan, if a car breaks down they will literally push it for miles to the nearest garage. So the Marines call in EOD to figure out if the car is an IED, the ANA don't like this plan and want to just shoot it with an RPG. A heated discussion breaks out and one of the ANA "Accidentally" fires and RPG at the car.....and misses. Instead he hits the Tree directly behind the car and low and behold a Suicide Bomber falls out of the tree, hits the car, and explodes.
The after action report went "viral" so to speak in our AO and the report was titled "I Couldn't write this Please don't try and bypass the langauge filter like this. Reds8n if I Tried".

About as good as the guy who stepped out from behind a building and fires an RPG without taking into account the wall behind him. Zipcuffed and toss in back of the Uparmor LMTV

Would have been nice if they could keep their mouths shut about exactly how they localized that target. You know that 5 minutes later, "no selfies...seriously" was adopted as a TTP.

Do you really think that will keep people from taking selfies?

As if that wasn't already a rule in any serious outfit? These ISIS guys aren't a military with good leadership, they're mostly brainwashed bullies lead by power-hungry megalomaniacs (though they do have some ex-military who know how to operate more esoteric weapons than AKMs). Their successes can largely be attributed to the abysmal quality of resistance there is against them. Anyone even half serious, like badly equipped Kurdish militia, can stop them cold.

Now that's what you call ironic. Terrorist gets foiled by another IED. Denied!

There is value in that. Making ISIL paranoid about their use of social media coming back to bite them in the ass (and giving the world an opportunity to point and laugh at them) makes them less effective at using social media to recruit more donkey-caves to their cause.
The fact that ISIS members take selfies and upload them and its used as intel is something the US military should take advantage of and shut up about. For reasons which should be obvious.
I bet this press release is causing a mulitude of facepalms in Mossad; Langley might also realise and not think highly of the crowing by the USAF sources on this. Now ISIS will teach its members to be more careful with selfies.
Why do you have such idiots who cant keep a secret in the US military?
I remember when the US bought stealth destroyer technology from the UK, and in a moment of braindead crowing about their new technology published pictures of the hull out of water. Something the Royal Navy had avoided doing and kept secret all the time the tech was developed and in service.

Because people are stupid. If you don't think ISIS will learn from this then you never served in Iraq or Afghanistan. The smarter leaders would use a phone for about a week and then buy a new pre paid one, they would never send out important info and they sure as hell would never utilize social media.
I wouldn't be surprised if the person who released this to the media loses their jobs and gets a court martial at the least.

God almighty, I find myself agreeing with Orlanth
Slightly OT, but I'm reading about D-Day (it being the anniversary) and one of the rare instances of Eisenhower going berserk. During the build up, secrecy was obviously paramount, so when a General got drunk, and told people at a cocktail party that he wouldn't be on this side of the channel in a few weeks, you can imagine Eisenhower's reaction.

Good thing it is the low level brainwashed guys, that want to be remember as a hero that are posting then. The leader wouldn't do it in the first place and do you really think the poeple talked into stripping bomb to their chest and will to be living sheild are smart enough to learn from this. They don't even learn from the guy blowing himself up, right before they put on their bomb vest.
Edit: look at the boston dumb ass who's told by his lawyer told him pled guilty, so he get life instead of death. Got to give it to his lawyer, they saved the state money on a long court case.

Perhaps there was never a selfie and the USAF just needed a plausible way of explaining how they had identified a building ...other than some other form of intelligence.
The military is capable of incredible acts of cunning as well as idiocy. As are the other side.

There is always the angle that as social media is one of ISIS' strong points, by showing them we can use it against them it may have a detrimental effect on their use of it.
However you look at it, it resulted in dead Jihadis, which is a win in my book.

Trust me when I tell you the US military is incapable of making "Cunning" Decisions. I remember watching several operations where common sense not only didn't prevail but was bombed to death with JDAMS and HIMARS

Brainwashing bypasses IQ, it doesn't remove it.
Intelligent people fall for scams and due to human nature cant unfall for them afterwards.
Educated people can become suicide bombers, also the eternal religious benefits appeal to some, and if you beleive in them because a strong incentive.
Yes most ISIS volunteers are ignorant, but they are also obedient. If their smart leaders say no selfies they can get away with it.
Edit: look at the boston dumb ass who's told by his lawyer told him pled guilty, so he get life instead of death. Got to give it to his lawyer, they saved the state money on a long court case.
Tsarnaev's plea bargain was rejected pre trial.
The briefs advice was good, the sooner its over an done with the sooner he is (mostly) forgotten. Also a lawyer doesn't want to be known for this type of work.
I doubt the case would have been much longer. The prosecution wanted to add all the evidence anyway as it included witness that wanted its time in court. There was 0% chance of an aquital and he was equally clearly sane.
Above all this has not shortened trials. A life sentence would do this, but a death sentence means extra layers of appeals. This makes more money for the lawyers concerned without the difficulty of legwork, as an appeal for Tsarnaev is a case of turn up, make a formal plea, apply for next appeal stage and collect cheque. Nothing more is there to be done.
