I've had 9 armies. Never ever had the desire to play space marines.... They just seem boring and generic to me. Has anyone else ever had this problem?

Well I mainly collect Xenos...I'm only really collecting Blood Angels because my mates want to start Horus Heresy but I'm not going to go all out on that army. Only reason I picked BA is because (at least in 40k) they are fast and best suit my style and I don't really care for Chaos.
I guess it depends on the person you ask.

Yeah, you can't really have anyone tell you what is fun or not, because no one really see the game or play the game the same way. I rarely play the ''human'' faction in any game, so at first glance, I would say that Imperial Guard was my least favorite army. After a while, I changed my mind and right now, I wouldn't mind fielding them.
It's a matter of perspective, and perspective tend to change. I dislike the Imperium of Man lore wise, but I currently have a lot of fun with my wannabe Ravenwing army for which I create a whole story for them, adding a layer to the lore to better suit my taste. Space Marine aren't that blend if you actually sit down and make your own lore.
You can be a renegade (not chaos, but just outlaw) space pirate Space Marine chapter who became zombie after their planet collide with superman!

I guess for me it's mostly the aesthetic.
To me nothing is awesome about super humans wearing armor that like 40 other chapters wear. They're just the blue space marines or the green space marines to me. Plus with how exaggerated they are in the story it doesn't reel me in. A lone human guardsman though standing up to a trygon, not that screams heroism. The mechanicum and their cult in machines screams cool, dark eldar and their treachery and cunning. Raiding out of the shadows seems awesome.
Space marines to me are like "urgh, we buff and can punch me things! Kill heretics rawr rawr!"

Depends on the chapter I think. Space Wolves and Grey Knights definitely break the SM mold. But Blood and Dark Angels or Ultramarines are just like, "ok we're astronauts with guns". I wouldn't say bland in general, but definitely compared to some of the other races.

SM are basically a bunch of white knight Mary sues in different colored power armor. Their trope/concept has been done a million and one times so no, I don't think they're interesting or cool as an army. At least space elves and space robo zombies are slightly less over done.

Threads like this are asking for arguements. It's an absolute personal opinion. Someone makes a sniffy comment about someone else favourite army and here we go.
I may want to add, that I really like every single wh40k army. Not equally, but they all have their appeal.

I really like the concept of mighty Space Marines. They aren't really human anymore. It's like Pacific Rim. 'To fight monsters, we created monsters.' The insane space fantasy opera of 40k, mankind creates mighty supersoldiers to battle the horrors of space and beyond. That, and I do like the aesthetic.

I have been an eldar player for 25 years.. off and on.. just eldar... I pretty much have a unit of 10 of everything eldar have.. it got ridiculous... but I had stormclaw sanctus reach box set and the space wolves finally got to me and I bought a landraider a razorback 2 boxes of long fangs and a dreadnaught .. I did this about 2 weeks ago so I feel in a unique position to answer this question.
Seems Space Marines are not really "good" enough at what they do, there is no real knack to it... you sort of plod.. Assault are not that fast, long fangs have no wounds to spare, tanks are slow and vulnerable to terrain simply blocking shots. Possible exception to being good enough is thunderhammer terminators. They are just unbreakable. But they are slow.
Plasma is really good tho as well as grav guns. But you are really limited how many plasma you can take.
Bolters are almost useless. Just walking wounds.
In short I like how Marines look, I am positive about playing and having fun with my new wolves but, I was expecting (from playing smurfs a million times) more awesomesauce than I got I think.
I will take them to my next proper game though, but I will expect to lose.

I've only played with SM armies that I borrowed from my friends. They lack good flanking abilities and also are looking straightforward for many people just because, in my opinion, the majority of players are playing them wrong. There is this kind of mentality of Space Marines players that i noticed and it's like "Oh. I'm gonna deploy lots of Tactical Squads cause my Marines are just tougher than the paper armies of my mate and Im gonna Leeroy Jenkins over enemy lines" and then gets rekt by the first 20 warrior necron squad that is outside their range. I prefer them to hold objectives rather than send them forward and combine with some bikers to hit hard new objectives or maybe drop pods as reserves. That's how I think about Space Marine armies. I hope I am not wrong and If i am i guess I'm going to be corrected soon.
I'm a IG fanboy , but my first owned by me army is Ultramarines in progress, just because I'm learning to paint and they seem an easy task for a newb in painting minis.

I don't have a problem with SM, but I rather collect 30k marines than 40k - as in 30k there are only other 2 non-marine armies, while in 40k there are many more.
Tau for 40k, Thousand Sons for 30k.

It took me a long time to give marines the light of day. Eventually, space wolves caught my eye (they were the first chapter that actually seemed to have personality from the outside looking in), and from there I picked up every 5th edition marine book that came out. My relationship with them keeps having ups and downs. I've basically gone...
"Space marines? Eh. Aren't they just brainwashed super soldiers incapable of doing anything but shooting stuff and praising the emperor?"
And then I was all...
"Oh hey. Space viking werewolves! That's pretty cool! Oh, and there are space vampires too? Oh wow, these primarch guys have like, this whole mythology built up around them! A lot of this human lore is actually pretty cool!"
But then I tried playing marines and started reading Black Library novels, so now I'm all...
"Huh... This is like the 50th story where the marines' tunnel vision and Emprah praising makes them behave in fairly stupid ways, and all the stories have pretty much the same tone to them. Some of these chaos legions have a lot of character, but Alpha Legion basically doesn't have rules, and Thousand Sons have pretty crummy rules."
So I enjoy some aspects of the spess muhreens, but they're oversaturated (I want more stuff like the Path of the Eldar/dark eldar series or some books from a 'cron lord's perspective). I also have this issue where they don't actually reflect the cool moments in the BL stories on the tabletop because they're the standard by which others factions are measured rather than being the threat that actually makes an eldar aspect warrior know a healthy amount of fear.
In defense of marines though, a few cool things about them include...
*Transhuman "angels" worshipped by the citizenry of the Imperium.
*Black Dragons are mutants who stab people with their retractable bone blades.
*Spess Wulves are vikings in spaaaaaace.
*Alpha Legions are basically the marine version of Oceans Eleven.
*Thousand Sons are a cursed, tragic legion that were forced to go rogue by fate and circumstance. Now Ahriman desperately seeks the magic he needs to free his brothers' souls.
|
ATTENTION. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

I've been playing and collecting since Rogue Trader days, and Marines have never interested me as an army to collect and play.
For me, I just think aesthetically they look silly, their lore is silly, and the fact that the game itself seems so slanted towards 'humanity' makes me dislike them even more.
The setting as a whole interests me - but the human aspect is the least interesting to me. If Marines were the only choice available - I'd probably still play, though it would be a themed Dark Angels list with a definitive Native-American themed fluff-feel, rather than the 'dark interrogator angsty' theme so prevalent nowadays.
But if you are referring to 'boring and bland' as far as game mechanics go, they are far from it. They have incredible diversity and even in the hands of a beginner are a fairly forgiving force to learn the game with.
Just my 2 coppers, though.

I like them. You have an army which can be tailored to suit many different playstyles, and a wide range of fluff options to choose from. You will never be ignored by GW as SM are the poster boys, and if you play a First Founding chapter, you can also play 30k HH games. They are without a doubt one of the most versatile hobbying armies in the game, for me.
