Christopher Lee has died at the age of 93.

Lee passed away in Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London, on Sunday after being treated for respiratory problems.

The actor made his name playing Dracula in the Hammer Horror films, as well as Scaramanga in classic Bond film The Man With The Golden Gun.

Lee was knighted in 2009 for services to acting, but also branched out into music in his later life.

The Telegraph report that Lady Lee delayed the public announcement until she had told the family.

His agency declined to comment when contacted by The Independent.

RIP indeed !

I was just getting ready to post this, but you beat me too it.

Such a bummer... Lee was extraordinary in just about every way, he will be missed!

Sad news indeed.

He was awesome in The Wicker Man, and my favourite Hammer Horror - Hound of the Baskervilles.

Let's not forget his role as Sauraman, as well.

I don't think any of us will.

He was an almost annual reader of The Lord of the Rings, it is great that he was able to bring a part of that world he loved so much to us through his craft before the end.

Sad news indeed. What a career though! WWII veteran, roles from Dracula to Saruman, (probably)oldest heavy metal singer...

The fact that almost 4 generations will remember him for different roles is pretty remarkable in and of itself. But whether he's Dracula, Scaramanga or Saruman the White, he will be remembered as the very definition of presence and gravitas.

His role as Death in Pratchett's 'The Colour of Magic' is a personal favourite. Once you've seen that, you can never read Discworld with any voice other than Lee in your head.

We could have a quick poll. What's everybody's favourite role Christopher Lee played?

As good as Sauraman is, Lord Summerisle (Wickerman) is my favourite, and I believe it was his personal favourite, as well.

No. All the no.

I don't think I have a favourite, I just enjoy what he brings to a film.

Feels a bit weird, I sort of say "Goodnight!" to Mr. Lee every time I have to go upstairs to bed. In my staircase there's a near life-size print of him as Dracula pointing at the camera.

It's a terrible film, but it's an amazing picture.

(A few seconds after this was taken I think)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
He and Peter Cushing will be sharing a very refined drink somewhere right now.

Admittedly I haven't seen large portions of his huge range of performances (I believe he's one of the most prolific actors of all time, if not the most) but I am of the generation where Christopher Lee was Saruman. He inhabited that role so perfectly, so absolutely, that it's pretty much a flawless performance.

I'm sure far more things will surface and be shared as time passes. The guy must have had so many many stories that touched people in those 93 years.

Sad news, but not wholly unexpected due to his age and recently reported health issues.

But he will never truly be forgotten, as his body of work spans generations within the hearts and imaginations of millions.

In all honesty, a lot of his Hammer work is uber, so bad it's good, but there are one or two stand out performances. Hound of the Baskervilles, Dracula, etc etc

Did Lee ever win an Oscar? Yes, I could wiki it, but I'm trying to rely on my own memory these days

gak. This year sucks in regards to celebrity deaths. Rip to one of the best actors of the SW Prequel, LotR, and so many movies before my time.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Sad loss indeed.

Chrtistopher Lee was head and shoulder above everyone else in the cinema business, metaphorically and usually physically also.

A true polymath and a gentleman. I cant think of any living man who is even remotely close to his breadth of talent and character. Let alone someone who was a household name since the late 40's until this year.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

No oscars. Just a shed load of other awards! Besides, Oscars are bull anyways.

My fave of his "current" roles was as the voice actor behind the Overlord of Freeport, Lucan D'Lere in the MMO Everquest 2.

When you've got to be an evil undead dictator commanding the loyalty of your legions of subjects, accept no substitute. Mr. Lee brought his talent and experience to making this character *sound* like the Evil Militaristic Dictator that you expected, rather than some simple, moustache-twirling villain.

I know this is a text-based forum, so this won't mean a lot, but one of my absolute favorite lines from this character is:

"When Lucan speaks... destiny listens."

Here's a link about it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hitynnK-E8

While I will say that he will be missed, he lived a full life and, from all accounts, had had one hell of an adventure. I'm glad that he got to have the sort of life that he did, and that he drew on those experiences, and his talents, to share them with the rest of us.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.
