Our game gets more and more ancient, bloated, unbalanced and mindless? We exposed ourselves by selling exclusive rules to biggest spenders? Independent stores turn their backs to us thank to our practices? Let's reboot the fluff! That should do it.
Because ongoing story is soooo important in tabletop game.

From the initial Age of Sigmar news thread, when its "feature" list was first confirmed:

A collosal, terrible, flaming, hysterical train wreck with burning clowns running around spraying it with seltzer bottles while ring masters cry out how everything is fine and we should all come in while the dancing elephants lurch around leaving trails of blood behind them.
How could I look away?

The ripples of this ending can be seen and felt in the various retcons of history... new things came about years before they had originally, some things disappeared as if they never existed...
The future ended long, long ago... it is just that nobody realizes it yet...
Best explanation ever. Especially given that we reached 999.M41 almost a decade ago in our time...
Formosa wrote:40k end times already happened.. Eye of terror campaign way back in 2003 I think, can't remember the year, but suffice to say at the time gw didn't have the balls to follow it through and has since retconned it to be just prior to the 40k end times, short answer chaos won, almost completely, the imperium won in space but that is about it, cadia was over run, and pretty much every sector that mattered was in chaos hands.
These days however they may actually follow through, but we're not likely to see a world wide campaign like we used to have, gw are just not interested in doing that anymore.
To be fair, I don't think it's been completely retconned. Most 'dexes and lore books don't even go in-depth into 999.M41. There are enough BL books set during that time that indicates that Abaddon pretty much had free reign around Segmentum Obscurus with his battlefleets rather than being stopped wholly at the Cadian Gate (since it's the only real path stable enough for a sizeable warfleet). The timeline has really just paused where Chaos has overrun Cadia (but there's still resistance on the ground), Chaos has blown up a couple of planets, but the Imperial Navy is "containing" the spread of Chaos within the Cadian Sector (mostly) through overwhelming force from neighboring sectors (Battlefleet Gothic, Battlefleet Solar, for example). So, I wouldn't say that it's been completely retconned.

Except the Eldar. Who then get pissed and destroy all of the planets in the galaxy.
GAME OVER!
I think you forgot that the Eldar was a pawn of the Elder Ones... which were destroyed by the C'tan and the Necrons...

I want GW to do the 40k End Times, and after that I want them to replace it with a game called "Age of the Emperor", which will see the game use square bases and ranks, and models that look very similar to WHFB factions.

I would like an end times event where 40k 8th edition is a complete re-write of the rules. It's very bloated.

If there's a 40k "End Times," a new faction of the classic alien greys would be so awesome!
At least it would give some lols

This is true! Wasn't it the Old Ones? But then again, the C'tan are sort of destroyed too. Oh yes, I forgot that the Dark Angels live on Craftworld DA too (their Warp-capable, flying remnants of Caliban), so I guess they would make it as well.

Old Ones? Elder Ones? I forget. Necrons ran away to let the Enslaver plague wipe out everyone else

The problem with a 40k End Times is that 40k as a setting spans an entire galaxy, where as Fantasy spanned a single world.
If nothing else, the 40k End Times would take decades, if not hundreds of years to play out in full.
This lends itself to the idea that what we are seeing now *is* the start of the End Times, with everything to play for and still a bit of time to play it.

I like how 40K is set at a tipping point where it feels like anything could happen.
I think it is a shame GW listened to it's customers and pushed forward the WHFB 'story'.

That's how GW see it.
