The thing for me is, they are pretty good, but they can't fight their loyalist counterparts because of the lack of storm shields. Normal termies they can deal with just fine, but those god damn storm shields man. Once those thunderhammers get to strike your termies will drop pretty fast.
Adding a lord and/or sorceror can help but on their own they will die. It doesn't help either that the loyalists can fit more into their tanks.

Against a horde army a small unit of termies is just an appetizer. Not big enough to kill a unit in one go, not survivable enough to survive more than two rounds of shooting/melee.
Against a horde army a big unit of termies can shred the backfield one unit at a time. Dealing with them will take the pressure off the rest of your army, allowing them to close to killing range with relative impunity.
Against an MSU/elite army everyone else's comments certainly apply, however. Just wanted to point out the difference.
An Orky player.

But a x5 man squad with combi meltas and combi melta on the sorcerer is a lot of fun and IMO the reaper autocannon is great against lower toughness HQ's like DE or Eldar.
I like Plasma over Melta most of the time. I don't worry about 'Gets Hot', but I feel the risk is worth the reward.
Just personal taste.

Long answer, noooooooooooooooooooooo...
Reasons being you're eating up an elite slot, (and yes, I know the elite slot is pretty terrible as is) but honestly, why bother wasting 115 points on 3 models that CAN, potentially DS safely, then blow something up.
You have a 1/3 chance to simply not do what you were hoping to do with them, with the potential of having them randomly DIE. Sure if they land safely and blow up a land raider with 3 combi melta, its nice, but extremely unreliable.
CSM are riddled with unreliable mechanisms and units. We have the Forgefiend for instance that is a mobile platform that sucks at shooting for no other reason other than poor writing and rule playtesting. Why bother sinking 175 points into something that moves 6" and has garbage BS on a 3HP AV12 Walker? No thanks. Doesn't help its massive and priority targeted most of the time (Which hilariously can be beneficial seeing as how BAD it is in every respect) Even triple Ectoplasma Cannons are garbage. 24" range? No thanks, Id rather take Havocs... Wait they cant take Plasma Cannons, wait no, they cant even take traditional plasma cannons. Oh well.
There are so many damn options in the CSM dex weapon wise and unit wise that just shouldnt exist. Mutilators anyone? Warp Talons anyone? Forgefiends, Thousand Sons, Its all a massive waste of time if you plan on being an army worth it's salt on the board. Fluff wise, sure, knock yourself out with your Tzeentch army, whom still have no real fluff ON THE TABLE to benefit your army. We get Thousand Sons CSMs, not even Terminators, and all they get are AP3 Bolters? LOL
I have nearly 20k points of CSM at this point, and it's only getting smaller. That entire reason is being GW are racist, against their equality of their products being sold to different consumers. SMs will forever be their babies and Eldar will forever get nifty rules which makes them both competitive and fun. CSM are labeled "Bad guys" and therefore cannot be competitive outside Forgeworld bought models and special rules and books. So we are forced to dish out more money for more models, that most of the times arent even allowed at local tournaments or even GW held friendly tournaments. Like god forbid I brought a Fire Raptor Gunship to a 1500 point local tournament. I'd get shot outside the store by some angry kid screaming "DIE HERETIC!"
Did you play Chaos in second edition or during the 2.5 Codex in 4th edition? Both books were amazing and somewhat broken. The 2.5 codex is arguably one of the best books for a game version ever. You could tailor your squads as you saw fit and they had legion rules for the traitor legions and you got bonuses for having the correct numbers for Nurgle, Khorne, etc. Then they got that awful book and well it has been sad since then and then this book came out and at least they can hold there own.
Also how do you have a 1/3 chance of having something bad happen on a deep strike? Isn't that only if you mishap?

That game put my faith in Khorne to the test. My table-neighbor looked at the match up and said "Here you're going to need these more than I will" and handed me a bag of Jello shots. They must have pleased Khorne because I walked out 11-2.
Now looking at another list with MORE tyrants and MORE mawlocks, I said to myself. "Oh well looks like it's time for another beer. It'll take the sting out of this. LOL" |

There are just to many ap2 weapons easily available in large numbers to make chaos termites worth taking. Grav weapons, and their easy proliferation was just the final nail in the coffin.
I have 30 assembled chaos terminators and they are still in a drawer in the basement cabinet.

I wish Chaos had access to Cataphratti terminator armor. The 2+ 4++ would be a nice improvement without having to purchase the mark of t.

quite good IMO.
combi-cide units, bodyguard, distraction, or even just a relatively killy unit, are all good options for using them, and it doesn't hurt that the models are so awesome.

Oh it is its just I seem to role all my ones when I role for my terminators. But I do enjoy popping transports with them left and right.
