I'll be running a modified 40k game with some friends of mine, with modified rules to make it more like grand strategy (full rules here). TL;DR battleforged army is split into 10 detachments, up to 2000 points each, one of which may be Deep Strike. No more than 1000 points on flyers. The other two players are 6e Eldar and Chaos Space Marines.

So far, I was thinking of taking two of the Skyhammer Annihilation force, which makes up the brunt of my Deep Strike. The majority of the rest of the points would be taken up by two Gladius SFs for Razorback spam. This still leaves me with quite a few points to spare, which I am unsure how to spend.

Edit: I should note, cheese isn't frowned upon, with the exception of spamming cheesy units, such as Wraithknights.

My thoughts so far:

  • I'm running Salamanders, and we'll probably rule that He'Stan's MC buff applies to the whole army (Though that's going to be true anyways if I pick only Formations (which I believe includes the Gladii), because everything will be part of a single Formation Detachment)

  • The above increases the opportunity cost of using grav weaponry, in addition to the existing drawback of having a smaller army.

  • Chapter Tactics are selected by formation, He'Stan's buff is for the whole detachment. Potential for cheese with putting Girlyman tactics on the Skyhammer formations if they go with gravs?

  • Getting Sterngaurd somewhere in there would be beneficial. The most direct path would be selecting a First Company Task Force for one or both Gladii.

  • Grabbing dreadnought support gets me a free drop pod. Taking a Storm Wing gets me another way to transport that Dreadnought, and a Drop Pod to use elsewhere. Said Storm Wing could be used to transport Vanguard Veterans to the front lines as well.

  • Any other suggestions on what to add to this list?

When the only tool you have is a Skyhammer, every army begins to resemble a nail.

A 10,000 point army looks like it would take a two hours to make a turn

You could ally on Angel's Fury, which is really, really good if you can feed it a couple thousand points (on top of the requirements).

    Or 25 Knights!!

We won't be playing full-on games, as I mentioned in the OP. Things would be 'scaled up' a bit, and the play process streamlined accordingly.

Not having allies is one of the rules of the formation, so I can't grab Angel's Fury. The aforementioned cheese potential of mixing chapter tactics is acceptable, because they're still all part of the SM faction.

If you look in my photos I have a picture of about 17,000 Eldar spread across my kitchen table. I imagine Space marines wouldn't look much different.

What is it with you people and calling him girlyman? That joke got old like ten years ago. Are you 12?

You are probably going to want some d weapon capabilities, which would mean a Lord Of War war hound or reaver stuffed in there somewhere. Or ways to deal with super heavies and gargantuans, so that could be drop melta command/stern guard, or multiple Skyhammer formations with grav weapons to plaster any gargantuan that hits the board. Grav weapons are limp noodles against super heavy vehicles, so you might want to bring lots of both.

Since its salamanders, might as well come in style with drop pods, if you don't want super heavies... Make sure to have a small CAD atleast to squeeze In a comms relay if you do.
