Behind you

I started IG because I could, and essentially because of the artillery.

My regiment is the second founding of the Lamellean Nebulaguard. Not that would mean much to anyone except two people here.

For me it's the odd bits - the psykers, the techpriests, ratlings and Ogryns. Also, when I started, the 2nd edition models with their carriage-mounted heavy weapons were new and exciting, so I bought some. I wish I'd bought Tallarn rather than Valhallan, but it's too late now.

Now, I like the tanks, but I prefer a 2nd edition-style of army - mostly infantry with a few vehicles rather than a full armoured infantry or tank army.

Because I am an unrepentant treadhead of massive proportions and I love my historical stuff.
My entire army is themed around Britain and Germany in Normandy/North France/Germany in 1944-1945 and is built with Warlords Games and Wargames Factory miniatures and eventually, when I have enough of each faction, I hope to split it in to two armies, a British themes one and a German themed one.

Like some other folks I was drawn in by the aspect of normal men and women standing and fighting against demigods, ancient aliens, and lovecraftian extra dimensional horrors.

As for a regiment, I made my own. Vorradis 75th "Crimson Cavaliers" Basically a knightworld regiment, heavy emphasis in "Castling up" and using that as a base to send out mechanized units.

Oh and dont forget this guy

The enemies of Mankind may employ dark sciences or alien weapons beyond Humanity's ken, but such deviance comes to naught in the face of honest human intolerance back by a sufficient number of guns.

Because I love the whole regimental/ company command breakdown. I love the tanks. I love the billions of little guys taking on the big guys.

I have Cadians by default, since they're the cheapest and most accessible (Catachans are all webstore-only now, and uglier anyway) but I have a platoon's worth of Steel Legion that I love. I'd have a ton more of them if I could afford it.

Tanks, tanks, more tanks and the Steel Legion. Gas Mask-Trenchcoat Mools for the win! Also the idea that in this galaxy filled with some of theist monstorous and danerous creatures in exsistence the common man is still fighting for his exsistence, and winning agaisnt them. I also love the world war aesthetic. Finally, Drive me closer so I can hit them with my sword!

Somewhere between England and New Zealand.

Why did I choose Guard? Several reasons:

A) I'm a fan of Mooks and generic soldiers in films and games. Starship troopers and star wars battlefront immediately come to mind.
B) when I told others who play the game that I was interested in playing Guard, they mocked me.
C) Let's face it, Guard have the best books. I read Gaunts ghosts and my decision was firmly set.
D) They are the only army with troops that can be empathised with. Nothing makes me prouder than when my crappy troops stand up against the toughest units an opponent can throw at it.

I chose Cadian models because... well they were all that was in the store at the time and I actually quite like their design. They have a good retro theme to them that I like. My army isn't a Cadian regiment though, it's my own made up one. Mainly because I can't stand the Cadian snot yellow and wanted to paint their tunics brown instead.

I chose guard so I could have masses of normal guys holding the line or charging forward with bayonets, hopefully backed by a Commissar to keep them in line.

Guys who who aren't supersoldiers fighting and somehow defeating the supercreatures of 40k.

Too bad Commissar backed Infantry Platoons aren't at all competitive.

I used to love the look on people's faces when the Guardsman and all of his friends do something really heroic.

Like my friend's 2 brand new freshly varnished units of Assault Termies Deep Strike in their shiny new drop pods onto my Guard platoon.

Who, after a well-drilled change of trousers, promptly raised their lasguns and cut down the 10 mini-dreadnoughts almost as their feet touched planetside.

Oh how I laughed.... til my irate friend proceeded to blow the entire offending platoon into next millenium with every gun he could train on them. Not a hero survived but they have been remembered many years on!

The Valhallans because they (for me) look the closest to a real army. I like the idea of normal men squaring off against the horrors of the universe. Plus I'd love to play Cold War era board games but around me there's pretty much no one. 40k is a great system to play these semi realistic men with.

Because even if my enemy makes every single to hit and to wound role in a game when all is said and done I will still have flashlights on the table. Because of every time some poor slob in a flak vest punches out a space marine. Because of every time i tear apart some alien beast, extra dimensional horror, and xenos heretic but nothing but bayonets and a prayer.

Because I'll have the models when I finish my Tyrant's Legion. May as well flesh it out to a full army. I'll likely end up with a Mechanized Regiment. Sentinels, Chimeras and Malcadors are friggin cool, and Artillary types fit my Tyrant's Legion well so may as well go that route.

They'll undoubtably pull double duty as Renegades too, just like my Astral Claws pull double duty as Red Corsairs.

Because they are as close to us as it gets, a combination of the Steel Legion coming out as I got more disposable income (I'm old) and the Gaunts Ghosts books starting and making my teen mind go nuts with the awesomeness. Since then I've managed to wrangle two more metal regiments and always have my eyes out for a big bunch of the other regiments from back in the day. As I've gotten older the game has almost divided into two games to me, the big game and the Guard vs Traitor humans game, my collection of both has exploded and with Age of Sigmars Khorne stuff it looks like the Chaos side is about to get serious re-enforcing. It really feels balanced as well, Guard on Guard with Chaos elements and I get to re-create all the epic movie moments I enjoy like bridge assaults, commando raids and armoured duels.

One of my friend play ig

he said it something like this:

"Unlike space marines and all other awesome guys out there, who simply fight for honor and such. These guys get their rifle, hop into a trench to fight a uneven battle, against all odds to protect their familie, friends and everything else they care about! Thats make them pretty awesome"

At that moment I really wanted to start IG my self.

and then he said:

"when space marines kills something or does something right, It is expected, when a guardsman do it, it is awesome and you feel like celebrating!"

Once upon a time (a really, really, really long time ago), I loved the mechanic of having conscripts get up to block line of site, and then go prone so that your real troops can shoot.

Then I liked that Guard lent themselves to weathered, grimy vehicles. And, I liked the "modern day human soldier with lasers and tanks" thing.

And, then, because I already had a bazillion marines, and I wanted more Imperium.

Most recently, because the tempestus scions are awesome models -- some of the coolest humans, I think.

I guess I just like the idea that in the future, with all those fantastic machines, discoveries and terrors, somewhere there's still men sat out in trenches looking at the rain and tutting a bit as their cigarettes blow out in the wind.
Something about folk just being folk, despite it all. I suspect it has something to do with being a fan of M*A*S*H and Allo Allo.

I play Tanith paired up with Mordians, and a small Commissariat cadet squad (okay it's just infantry troops stat-wise). Because I like hats, I like books and I like juxtaposing the stealthy Ghosts and bright white Mordians.

Krieg! What a hole...

The one true human faction, the Guard. I took Krieg because of the models and how they represent the extreme grimdark of 40k and then the Scions because of hellguns and the fact that they're elite humans.

Fake Englandland

Gaunt's Ghost is bloody fantastic is the reason I got interested in the army to begin with, what actually got me to start them is actually a weird story. So, basically, I used to DM a lot of Shadowrun, but I always wanted some really cool models for Knight Errant and gangers, and at my FLGS, they had some Catachan and Cadians, so I decided they would work well for that. The Cadians I had became the Knight Errant officers, and the Catachans became the Gangbangers I would have them run into, I ended up selling off the Catachan models because I actually like the consistent look that I have with my Cadians, castellan green is a color I really like personally, then I decided to look into the Only War RPG, and I fell in absolute love with them. True story, quite a few of my Guard models were just from stuff I wanted to use in that game, I fell in love with the actual humanity that came from the game. The desperation, and the hope that can still come through in the game at least, so, after that ended, I just decided to get the Codex and kept going. I don't care that it isn't the most powerful codex, it's a passion project to me.

Shadowrun is the best game ever. It's the only thing I have ever played in which I have jumped out of a shot out van with a chainsaw to cut a flying drone in half before leveling a building with ANFO assisted by a troll, a dwarf, an elf, and a wizard.
