Subject: Ravenwing Strike Force - Am I dumb or what?

Crazed Spirit of the Defiler

Good day everyone. Let me start by saying that I was excited to see the Dark Angels codex and I think they did a good job on a lot of portion of the book.
BUT, I have a big question that bother me. Did they messed up the Ravenwing Detachment?
There is 1 Hq that need to be brough mandatory, and 2 Optional. That's great. BUT, the Detachmnet only permit unit with the Ravenwing Special Rule. The problem is, apart from Sammael (and Sableclaw), I don't see any other HQ with the Ravenwing Special Rule. In fact, most of them have the Deathwing Special Rule. So HOW am I suppose to bring 1 optional HQ with this Deatachment???? (I wanted to have a Libby on a bike as my 2nd HQ ;( )

ok ok. I am not sure how to react to the Ravenwign portion of the codex lol (the one that interest me).
-No bike as troop? Ouch
-No formation/detachment that give ObjSec to Bike? Aye aye aye
-Reroll-Jink? Awesome but especially useful only for unit that turbo-boost turn 1.
-No more banner of Devastation? :( I'm a sad panda
-Only 1 Apo per army? Guess I'm gonna have to live with that.
-Only 1 Ravenwing command squad slot if I use the Detachment? I can live with that, especially since I can now field 6 Black knight instead of 5, and have only 1 Apo in my army)
-No more libby on bike without FAQ (hopefully)? I'm a very sad panda.

when the HQ debacle gets remedied (if?) then the RW force will be the best build in the codex. No obsec is of little consequence. A RWSF with an added landspeeder support squadron is a formidable beast. I'd prefer not to take Sammael at all as I feel hi is overcosted for his abilities.

Yeah I agree bullyboy, I also believe that RW is powerful in that dex. I just need to get back into it haha. I prefer the flyer over the landspeeder, but only for the look purpose, not for the power level.

Not only is there only 1 HQ allowed to be taken by the rules, but the strike force's special rule allows you to ReRoll your Warlord Trait... And Sammy/Sable has a set Warlord Trait. It's obviously an error, but the question is if/when they will fix it.

When the enhanced digital codex is released its possible they might have it fixed already. They sometimes do that. I often note differences on release between the digital and print codex so lets wiat and see a bit.

And they never announce it, so you have to just randomly know where they made changes. Like when they had suddenly fixed the problem with how Repentias used their FNP, and I didn't know until probably months later.

Last codex we had was rife with stupid problems as well, RW command squads were only 3 man, Belial forgot his iron halo, plasma talons weren't rappid fire. Thankfully a day 1 faq fixed those and the internet all chuckled at gw. Hopefully this is the same thing and well see this and DW fixes as well allowing them to arrive turn one.

Take another look - you get to flat out turn 1 and jink for free, without having to snap shoot next turn.

it's possiable this change is "working as intended" and they wrote this formation this way more to leave room open for future expansion.
much like how the space marine codex only gives us the gladius strike force but implies there are other types out there as well.

I haven't heard of this. There's evidence that they'll be adding another type of gladius to the SM codex?

they're not said they are nesscarily going to write rules for it. but Codex Space Marines notes the Gladius strike force is simply the most common of the codex approved strike forces. However many other strike force templates exist, from the entirely airborne Javalin strike force, to the massed firepower of the hammerblow strike force...
it also goes further to note many space marine chapters have unique strike force models named to honior their primarch and center around his teachings,
while right now this is PURE fluff, the neat thing about the formation building approuch to lists is how modular it is. GW could tomorrow put out a white scars supplement and give us the rules for a white scars specific strike force.
so basicly looking at everything, I think GW is writing their rules with a more open ended "so we can add new stuff in later" mind set.
the ravenwing adding in the ability to take other HQs allows GW to put out a bike mounted interrogator chaplin model and put out a dataslate to allow you to slide him into the ravenwing.
or it allows FW to give us say "Captain Micheal. commander of the 2nd company of the Angels of Absolution"
etc

but that doesn't make sense. The Ravenwing have their own Chaplain, so how does he get into battle?

Yeah I know that, that's why I said ''Reroll-Jink? Awesome but especially useful only for unit that turbo-boost turn 1. '' cuz after that, your jink is going to cut a lot of your firepower.

I don't understand why you'd use a Ravenwing strike force. I mean, the T1 boost and free jink is great but I like the bonuses of the two Ravenwing formations more (especially the Suppport Squadron). Tempted to have a force consisting of 2x attack squad formations, a support formation, the flyer formation and some deep striking deathwing (in their formation) for good measure. Probably quite expensive but could always mix in a CAD with a few bits.

You would use it if you want to field a bunch of black knights with formation like benefits.
I agree that the other two formations are great but there are no individual formations that include black Knights. Getting to use them to steam of the table, unload their plasma talons and getting that first turn free jink is awesome. Throw in a darkshroud for even more fun.

Yeah but in order to get free jink turn, you have to not shoot turn 1 (you have to turbo-boost). Keep that in mind. With scout + move, you can get in rapid fire range turn 1 most of the time. So I prefer shooting turn 1 rapid fire, Jink, then snap shot rapid fire turn 2. Instead of Turbo-boost turn 1, jink, and rapid fire turn 2.

It all depends if you want to get your Deatwhing closer. If you don't, yes, you fire turn 1. The real benefit is the extra distance you can bring your Terminators in safely.

True that. But I run pure Ravenwing, and I plan on only using a 6man command Squad of Blacknight.
As of now tho, I'm just happy that I have a way to field a full Ravenwing. I'm not too too worry about the rules, as I play mostly for fun and rarely in a competitive setting. I was only really disapointed about that error that don't permit me the use of my Librarian Biker that I modeled just for that army lol
Oh well, at the end of the day, my friends will let it slide so I'm all right with that. For those who absolutly want me to bring what the chart says, well they will have to find a new opponent.

So I prefer shooting turn 1 rapid fire, Jink, then snap shot rapid fire turn 2. Instead of Turbo-boost turn 1, jink, and rapid fire turn 2.
This assumes you go first. If you go second or deploy to go first and they seize on you, you may want/need to jink first turn. In this case you might as well turbo boost since you are now snapfiring, get a free second turn jink, then fire at full bs. Hopefully you did well with you rerollable jink.
Also there may be times where your first turn targets are unfavorable. Mostly out of LOS or heavy/all reserve. In this case you might as well turbo boost and get the free jink.
It isn't so much a think you will use all the time as a powerfull ace you can play if need be.

No Troops (there are no Troops with the Ravenwing rule anyway). Just HQ, Elites, Fast Attack, and Heavy Support. All of these must have the Ravenwing rule.

So does this mean I can field this formation by itself and it would be considered s legal army list?
