Hey guys, building some Marines using what bits I've got left has me at a dead end. I've run out of bolter arms, but I still have plenty of bolt pistol and chainsword arms. I was considering using those and making a unit of Assault Marines with a Rhino or Drop Pod, but I'm wary of how useful they would be. I rarely see people running Vanguard Vets, let alone less potent and well-equipped versions of them. Is there any reason to include them?

They have their uses. If you run BA, then packless ASM in pods are pretty good, just get a couple specials. Also, any of those guys makes for a very identifiable Sergeant in a tactical squad.

You can also use them in black Templar crusader squads, or carcharadon tactical squads.

Also who knows what the future holds? Maybe t4 w1 sv 3+ infantry will be great next edition.

Unless you're playing BA, I don't think assault marines are really worth it. In that faction, they're great in free pods or fast rhinos packing as many special weapons as you can wield in a 5 man squad. Alternatively, if you're running Dante as your warlord, a deep striking 5 man squad with 2 specials and a matching combi (retaining jump packs) will give you a lot of mileage.

I often use a pod with a five man assault squad and two flamers. Or at least I used to.

Same here. With the price tweak it’s not as efficient as it used to be. But if running a demi company in drop pods, It’s not a horrible unit. I get a reasonable amount of use out of mine. I did magnetize them, so the packs can go on if I need them in the sky.

Crusader squads are pretty fine.

BP+CCW scouts are good too.

They're adequate. Not great. I've stopped using them and haven't missed them. The triple melta thing is usually a bust, really. You can't HP anything out with three meltas and you are praying for an explodes. 50/50 chance to dust a Rhino. Pitiful, really for melta. And your opponent has to be brain dead and let you drop next to good targets.
