So while reading the Morat Manual, I fell over this passage:

CC is where these guys really shine. CC21 and MA level 4 means you will most likely kill your enemy in hand to hand. Especially if you toss smoke to cover the enemy figure and charge in so they can't shoot at you. Daturazis are often underestimated by opponents... but only before encountering them in hand to hand.

Can someone explain to me how and why that works.? Reading over the smoke grenade rules, I couldn't see how it would prevent my opponent from firing

Short Answer: You need LoF.

Long Answer: Smoke Ammo says see Visibility Conditions (Zero Visibility Zone) pg165. Note this Zero Visibility Zone is not the same as one created by Zero-V Somke dispite the name.

Peter: As we all know, Christmas is that mystical time of year when the ghost of Jesus rises from the grave to feast on the flesh of the living! So we all sing Christmas Carols to lull him back to sleep.
Bob: Outrageous, How dare he say such blasphemy. I've got to do something.
Man #1: Bob, there's nothing you can do.
Bob: Well, I guess I'll just have to develop a sense of humor.

If you're IN their LoF when you throw smoke, it WON'T stop them being able to shoot you. It will be a f2f ARO with their shot v your ph roll for the smoke throwing (or BS from a launcher).

It will stop them from shooting you AFTER the order when it is thrown though (provided they don't have MSV2 or 3).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

What is Zero-V Smoke? Rule book only lists Smoke and that the other thing that lowers visibility without stopping it, and from what I can tell Smoke doesn't hinder lv2 visors.

You're correct
Some have access to Zero-V smoke (PanO ONLY has it even), a fancy smoke that also blocks MSV2+
MSV2+ is not rare per se, but it's not plentiful either, so smoke is a very valid tactic to move forward safely, it can be very order-intensive if you go nuts with it

Just a small note on Zero-V: it's a bad translation, the Spanish word for the same item is significantly different from their word for Zero Visibility. "Null Vis" or something similar would have been better.

I really need to stay away from the 40K forums.

Problem is, in Spanish Zero Visibility Zones are called Zonas de Visibilidad Nula.

Thus, in Spanish Zero-V Smoke (which is called Humo V-0) doesn't get confused, and the CB team probably never thought how the translation would affect it.

Where are the rules for Zero V Smoke?

The N2 HS & C: P download on the Infinity site. Should really be in the N3 Weapon download, but for some reason it is not. With any luck it will be renamed in
N3 HS, but until then it is basically Somke that acks like both a Zero Visibility Zone and White Noise Zone in one.

Zero v basically can't be seen through. It's like a zero vis zone (which is what regular smoke gives) plus you can't msv through it all white noise as mentioned above.

The op quote mainly means using smoke to work up a board to get into cc especially as a link. Getting into cc without anyone having an aro is tough though. Hence why kinetematica works so well now for high phys cc models and cc is now more viable.
