couple clarifications...

1. the 1/3rd rule.. who do we count it as? i assume its the smaller army?
ie.. my opponent has 21 models. a third of that is 7. so if i had 28 or more he would get to claim sudden death?

2. once a sudden death condition is claimed, does it remain for the game?

lets say on turn one he declares sudden death.
by turn 2 we have fought and both have 10 models left. is his sudden death condition still in effect? (i would hope so)

3. can sudden death be claimed mid game? ie we start with 50 models each but by the end of turn 3 hes down to 20 models and i've got 40. can he then claim the condition? (again, id assume so)

thanks!

Correct, the outnumber player gets to choose a Sudden Death objective.

Yes, he can achieve that objective at any point in the game.

Yes, Sudden death objectives are chosen before the game starts, so it is possible he may outnumber you during the battle, but since he started out outnumbered he keeps the SD Obj.

The sudden death objective is chosen before the game starts, and there isn't a stipulation about choosing one during the course of the game.

1. That is correct.

2. Yes, the objective is set at game start and stays until either the game ends or you claim a Major Victory by achieving the objective.

3. Nope. Sudden Death is based on starting army size. If we both start with 10 models, there will never be a Sudden Death objective... even if later in the game I significantly outnumber you due to casualties.

having just re-read the rule.. i dont see how you guys are so sure about whether sudden death can be claimed later.

it simply says "if one army has a third more models than the other..."

youd think it should say either "if at the beginning" or "if at any time"

but since it says neither, id think sudden death could be claimed later in the game, no? does anyone agree with me or am i just wrong and in the minority?

It says specifically "after generals are nominated". This is listed within the section that says "The Battle Begins". Pretty cut and dry as to when you're allowed to create a sudden death determination.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Oh duh, I didn't see that. You're right, that line makes it obvious. Thanks!

Since some people have said that models off the table are in reserve, would it not hold that if you brought a bunch of things with you then they count against your army size?

It sounds silly but is an honest question after reading the rules and pondering on it.

The rules specifically say otherwise.

"You can continue setting up units until you
have set up all the units you want to f ght in
this battle, or have run out of space. T is is
your army. Count the number of models in
your army – this may come in useful later.
Any remaining units are held in reserve,
playing no part unless fate lends a hand."

Pretty obvious the models in reserve don't count towards your army size.

Then this probably is a better place to mention how that wording interacts with "summoning" and how thT works/is bAlanced, but that isn't for this thread.

Models added to your army during the game (for example, through summoning, reinforcements, reincarnation and so on) do not count towards the number of models in
the army

Again, any 'off board' reserves, whether they turn up during the game or not, do not apply for your army size.

The only exception would be units which are specifically 'deployed' but just aren't visible to the opponent (like a skaven assassin, who's on the board, hidden in one of my units - you just don't know which one).
